New probe confirms Trump officials blocked Puerto Rico from receiving hurricane aid
The Trump administration also obstructed an investigation looking into why it was depriving the U.S. territory of congressionally approved funds, the report found.

The administration of former President Donald Trump obstructed an investigation looking into why officials withheld about $20 billion in hurricane relief for Puerto Rico following the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017, one of the deadliest U.S. natural disasters in over 100 years, a new report says.....
Seven months after the probe was launched, two top HUD officials admitted to knowingly missing the congressionally mandated deadline to issue a notice that would have unlocked billions in federal recovery funds to Puerto Rico. Carson later defended his agency's actions by echoing Trump talking points — citing concerns about corruption, fiscal irregularities and "Puerto Rico's capacity to manage these funds."
Throughout his term, Trump repeatedly opposed disaster funding for Puerto Rico while disputing and failing to acknowledge Maria's death toll. Trump had also told top White House officials "that he did not want a single dollar going to Puerto Rico,".....
Under Trump, Congress had approved a total of $20 billion in HUD funds for Puerto Rico's post-hurricane reconstruction, a historic amount. But the agency stalled the release of the aid in 2019 and imposed additional restrictions and requirements last year on how Puerto Rico could gain access to the funds....
The latest probe comes two days after President Joe Biden's administration removed Trump-era restrictions unique to Puerto Rico limiting its ability to access recovery funds through HUD. The agency also unlocked access to $8.2 billion in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation funds to help the island build resiliency against future disasters. The aid was approved by Congress in 2018.
Biden eliminated restrictions requiring incremental grant obligations, a federal financial monitor to supervise the aid and additional oversight from the island’s federally imposed financial oversight board, according new HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge.
The federal government has allocated nearly $69 billion to help the island recover from Maria as well as other disasters that have hit the island over the past few years. But most of the money, specifically funds for housing and infrastructure relief, hasn't made its way to communities on the island. Puerto Rico has received $19 billion, according to the Office of Recovery, Reconstruction and Resiliency.

State Lottery Ticket in Student's Christmas Stocking Wins Him $1 Million
By Catherine Ferris On 1/11/22 at 12:03 PM EST
Those opening Christmas gifts may receive something unexpected, but one college student received the ultimate surprise when he learned the lottery ticket in his stocking won him $1 million.
Brian Donohue, a mathematics major at the University of Virginia, was the lucky winner of Virginia Lottery's Bank a Million game. A release from Virginia Lottery stated that Donohue's mother purchased the ticket for the December 22 drawing at a Giant Food in Oakton.
Donohue told lottery officials he plans to put his winnings toward his school tuition.
Bank a Million, a lottery game only played in Virginia, has drawings twice each week. The game's top prizes are $1 million, $500,000 and $250,000, depending on what the player wages on the ticket. Winners receive the prize amount after federal and state tax withholdings.
"The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 3.8 million," officials with the Virginia lottery said. "The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 18.3."
Donohue's mother purchased the ticket and chose the numbers for that ticket. All of the numbers she chose matched with the winning numbers. Because they matched, a Bonus Ball number wasn't needed to win the top prize.
Players choose six different numbers that range between one and 40. The Bonus Ball number is not chosen by players.
This is not the first time a Virginia resident won $1 million from a state lottery game.
Dennis Willoughby, a North Chesterfield resident, was buying some chocolate milk for his children from a 7-Eleven location in Richmond and added a scratch ticket to his purchase.
Rather than taking the full $1 million prize in annual payments over the course of 30 years, Willoughby opted to take a one-time payment of $640,205 before taxes.

Two stories about gun maker Daniel Defense popped into the news today.
Days after the pandemic fund opened, they received $3.1 million in government small business aid via the Paycheck Protection Program used to support it's 200 employees.
(I'm not sure how 200 employees qualifies as a small business, considering they are the largest privately owned firearms manufacturers in the country.)
The Twitter account of Daniel Defense reportedly had an advertisement photo of a young child holding a similar weapon used in the Uvalde mass shooting stating “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Interesting mindset... ya think?
