Why Monday's stock market panic is 'overdone'

Fox Business anchor Melissa Francis said on “Outnumbered” that she thinks Monday’s “panic in the market” is "overdone," reacting to the day’s sharp selloff.

Francis made the comment as U.S. equity markets were drastically lower Monday after an oil price war broke out between Saudi Arabia and Russia and the new coronavirus showed signs of spreading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by as many as 2,046 points, or 7.9 percent, in the opening minutes of trading while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were lower by 7.4 percent and 7.3 percent, respectively. The Dow and S&P 500 were on track for their biggest drops since December 2008.

“This downdraft is not about this coronavirus response this morning,” Francis noted. “It’s about what’s going on in the oil markets and we see this massive selloff in oil because Russia and Saudi Arabia were cooperating.”

She added, “It’s an oversupply in oil in the market and they were cooperating to support price. Now they are not.”

Francis then noted that there is now a price war as it pertains to crude oil.

“A lot of regular people have said, ‘Why is this bad for Americans?’ Because it might signal a recession or bring on a recession,” she noted.

Francis went on to note the connection to the novel coronavirus.

“The reason why the price of oil is falling is because people aren’t traveling so this is really important,” she said.

“What’s important is we have the right people in Washington right now,” Francis continued. “This is what [the president's chief economic adviser] Larry Kudlow has been saying. We have [Treasury Secretary] Steve Mnuchin. We have a president who understands credit markets and understands that as you see companies be threatened by a possible recession, by the low price in oil, that they know to how to respond in a very targeted way in order to support businesses and the economy and I think this panic in the market today is overdone.”

frustrated

What ? Here I have wondered about a comment I made in a blog, and after a lot of time and effort, I cannot submit what I had in mind to add to it ?! blues

Very well, - here it comes:
Oh, I mess up my head - all by myself ;) Not a scientist, just wondering about stuff.

In a comment earlier here, I did mention a ozone layer depletion in the Northern Hemisphere.
Some mentioned the ozone-hole at the south pole, which is another matter. This had us ban Freon-gases in our spray cans, and so on. But if it isn't chlorofluorocarbons, then what is it ?

Well, the weather and "global warming" does of course play into this. In the northern hemisphere, there is a seasonal change in the ozone layer thickness, as well as a splitting up of the polar vortices. Then there is chemical reactions due to incoming fluxes of energetic protons from the sun, which in the case of chlorofluorcarbons, broke down the ozon layer at the South Pole. To me, nitrogen oxides may seem to play a role. Perhaps coming from warmer air masses of our more populated regions. Need some input from climate experts here. Perhaps another argument for electric cars ?

The trouble with chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine...

There are drugs used to treat malaria... chloroquine and its less-toxic cousin hydroxychloroquine that have been around for decades. President Trump named these drugs (in press meetings and Tweets) as promise to treat COVID-19. Federal health officials issued warnings the drugs are NOT approved to fight COVID-19 and could come with serious and harmful side effects.

In the news this morning, already there has been a run on these drugs that have been used to treat people with lupus as it's created a shortage.

A man in Arizona died and his wife is hospitalized after they ingested chloroquine phosphate, a product meant to clean fish tanks. She and her husband got the idea to self-medicate after watching Trump's news conference. When questioned, she knew it wasn't FDA approved, but "Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure."

The trouble with chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine is Trump had no business selling America on false hope.

That's my opinion and your opinion may differ.

Does COVID Stand for ‘Chinese-Originated Viral Infectious Disease’?
There are different processes and purposes for naming diseases.

Claim
"COVID-19" is named so because it is the 19th "Chinese-Originated Viral Infectious Disease."

Rating

False
About this rating

Origin
As governments fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Snopes is fighting an “infodemic” of rumors and misinformation, and you can help. Browse our coronavirus fact checks here. Tell us about any questionable or concerning rumors and “advice” you encounter here.
As the World Health Organization (WHO) has noted, viruses and the diseases they cause often have different names: “For example, HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. People often know the name of a disease, such as measles, but not the name of the virus that causes it (rubeola).”

During the pandemic of 2020, most everyone was familiar with the name of the coronavirus disease that was sweeping across multiple countries (COVID-19), but less so with the name of the virus that caused it (SARS-CoV-2). In either case, many people weren’t aware of the derivations of those names, leading some to take japes like the following seriously:

covid stands for chinese originated viral infectious disease

The claim in the above meme is false. The true origins of the names of the coronavirus behind the 2020 pandemic and the disease stemming from it are rather straightforward, however.

The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) announced “severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)” as the name of the newly discovered virus on Feb. 11, 2020. As the WHO observed, “This name was chosen because the virus is genetically related to the coronavirus responsible for the SARS outbreak of 2003. While related, the two viruses are different.”

On the same day, the WHO announced “COVID-19” as the name of the new disease caused by that virus. The first part of that name is a shortening of the phrase “coronavirus disease,” and the latter part reflects that the disease was first reported in the year 2019.

Although the strange new pneumonia of unknown cause first appeared in a cluster in Wuhan, China, nothing about the name of that illness or the virus that causes it reflects a geographical origin. The notion that the name COVID-19 stands for “Chinese Originated Viral Infectious Disease” and reflects that it is caused by the “19th virus to come out of China” is nothing more than a bad joke.

We know Biden has roaming hands, but how far have they roamed?

Before you even begin to read this post, remember what Hillary Clinton, the voice of the left in 2015, said about s*xual assault allegations: “Every survivor of s*xual assault deserves to be heard, believed, and supported.” With that fixed in your mind, it’s time to talk about Joe Biden.

The #MeToo movement in America reached its crescendo in 2017. The diminuendo phase happened soon after, when it seemed as if every Democrat man in America, especially in Hollywood and the media, had been playing fast and loose with women, even while pandering to feminists.

Up until spring 2019, when he began his presidential run, Joe Biden seemed immune. That was when, Lucy Flores, a Bernie Sanders supporter, claimed that, in 2014, when he was still Vice President, Joe Biden touched her inappropriately and kissed her head at a campaign rally.

Biden denied the accusation. And because Biden seemed like the best hope to beat President Trump, he got a pass. (Recall that, back in 1998, feminist reporter Nina Burleigh said of Clinton, “I would be happy to give him a bl**job just to thank him for keeping abortion legal.” Politics before principles....)

Tara Reade, however, believed Flores’s claims. To support Flores, she went public with her own story about the time that Biden had “put his hand on my shoulder and run his finger up my neck.” However, because Reade was threatening the man who would save America from Trump, the Democrats threw at her the worst insult they could think of, calling her a Putin puppet. Reade retreated.

As the Democrat Party began to consolidate around Biden, Reade decided that, for her daughter’s sake, it was time to tell the whole story about Joe. She reached out to Time’s Up, a post-#MeToo organization that was established to help survivors of s*xual assault and harassment tell their stories. Because Reade supported Sanders, Time’s Up bowed out of helping her. The organization was afraid that doing so would look like a political act and threaten its non-profit standing. Additionally, Reade had written nice things about Putin, which gave credence to the charge she was a Russian operative.

Eventually, Reade found her way to Katie Halper, a podcaster and journalist who often works with Rolling Stones’ Matt Taibbi (one of the last honest left-leaning journalists). On Wednesday, Katie Halper released a short excerpt of a more extended interview with Reade. In the excerpt, Reade gives graphic details about what Biden allegedly did to her in 1993.

According to Reade, she was working in Joe Biden’s office in 1993. Her supervisor asked that she deliver a gym bag to Biden. Reade reached Biden just as he was finishing a conversation with someone, after which they were alone.

Suddenly, Biden pushed Reade up against a wall, slithered his hand down the outside of her skirt and up the inside, and then thrust his fingers, not just into her underwear, but into her. At the same time, he started kissing her and asking her if she wanted to go somewhere else.
