pretzelman: you're comments get more childish along the way...if you can't debate intelligently...-please don't bother
What is childish about wanting a specific starting point? From where are we starting? What exactly is your definition of poor? Is it too much to ask that you actually give something to debate on? If you have no starting point, no middle and no end, what the hell is there to debate. Sorry for asking that you be specific on anything!
Can I get a refund for the $2,500/year my parents spent for me for private school? Or, how about the $35,000/year for private college for my kid? Oh, I'm sorry, it is my choice to get a better education, not a right!
pretzelman: no I'm saying it's available, whether you choose to access it or not!!
It is available... a hospital that uses public funds can not turn a person away who is in need. The hospital will just have to write it off at tax time. Even Illegals can use this options.

Parent's should be able to get a tax credit for their children attending private schools. It saves the government $$$$.
I think the federal government should get out of the business and revert the power back to the states, because the federal government has NEVER figured out how not to screw things up.

that is only for emergency......what about staying healthy and not waiting till it's an emergency? Emergency room car cost a lot more than a visit to a wellness center!!
Indyfella: I'd prefer to give people free food, housing, cars, gas money, vitamins, exercise bikes, etc. That seems like a better deal.
Well, the fact is that we already have a socialized medical system, Bob. The difference between ours and so-called "universal" healthcare is consistency. Ours is a hopelessly hodgepodge system, and the costs are higher for medical care per capita than most universal systems because of that.
My first recommendation is total FREE MARKET healthcare - and that means radical stuff like eliminating government regulation of all aspects of healthcare. Absent that thoroughgoing kind of reform, I'd suggest universal, because it's logically consistent with our already heavily socialized system and offers economy of scale advantages...

Economy of scale advantages hasn't worked to well with Social Security.

Aneurin Bevan Creator of the National Health Service Born: 15 NOV 1897 Died: 06 JUL 1960 Place of Birth: Tredegar Famous For: Creator of the National Health Service
The purpose of getting power is to be able to give it away Aneurin Bevan
Trivia: The Manic Street Preachers named an album after a Bevan quote - This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours.
Biography: The son of a Tredegar miner, Nye Bevan was a pioneering Labour politician who created the NHS.
Nye Bevan is my hero. There are undoubtedly many ills in the NHS today, but it still provides an incomparable, highly skilled, and free service to all, regardless of wealth or status.
Fortunately here in Spain, I am entitled to receive the same free health services.
I still want to know if I am rich or poor so that I can put myself in the proper class and get in the right line for whatever it is that I am entitled to.
