rocketqueen: i suppose what i was trying to say was its not the people that have BEEN diagnosed with a mental illness (aslong as they are monitored properly and taking thier meds as prescribed), it is the ones who ARENT diagnosed yet
A very good question. And I think you may have hit on something here. I am uncertain if whether or not psychological evaluation is mandatory prior to filing for a gun permit, but perhaps if it were, there would be less amount of people getting the permit. However, that still would not resolve the problem of the crazoids obtaining guns....they'll just buy them on the streets.

They do NOT do psychiatric evaluations here in AUS, although i would higHly recommend it for here and in AMERICA
Per capita(ack, I'm growing tired of those words) gun ownership in the rural U.S. is higher than in the urban areas, yet gun related deaths are lower.
Individual crime and violence has a strong correlation to social and economic conditions. I think we are better served to focus on improving those conditions.
My point is and has been(my inherent distrust of organizations aside), that this is not a worthwhile fight at this time. There are regions in much greater need of assistance than the U.S., and whithin the U.S. there are more productive ways of improving life here, that won't be met with as much resistance. I'd rather focus on education, health care, employment equality, trade issues, violent behavior, and IDEALLY the destruction of our class system(ok that will hit a little resistance).

Here in AUSTRALIA, it is extremely hard to buy illegal firearms, and the really nutty people usually cant afford to buy them on the black-market (there is a distinct correlation between poverty and mental illness, not that i'm sayin poor people are mentally ill, more so mentally ill people tend to live in poverty for the most part)

Fair enough, a black market would drive cost up,
and restrict access to those who can amass some resources.
