jonathan_heart: i might get a beating for this, but i think N Ireland should become its own sovereign state.

And who would you suggest as king and Queen....

jonathan_heart: its people are unique for the hardships they've had to endure, and much as it hurts me to say i dont think there will ever be a united Ireland.

Probably not due to Lisbon 2 but a week is a long time in politics..

jonathan_heart: all the same i think its people in this day and age after all the violence endured deserve their own unique identity, instead of being the victims of a never ending tug of war

I was born in the north of Ireland...Makes me Irish. I don't need or want any other.

At the minute they rely heavely on subsidies from the UK and us.....but that is mainly down to the conflict and the aftermath....if they do get their heads together maybe it'e a possibility? dunno

if anything i think the northern irish people are extremely passionate and driven, and if that passion and drive was diverted away from sectarian issues, and towards economic issues, i think that in itself is a recipe for success

i'm happy that you see yourself as Irish, but for many others its a sore point that N Ireland is, in official terms, part of the United Kingdom. And violence has prospered because of this very point. If you happily see yourself as Irish now, then i dont see how N. Ireland becoming its own sovereign state would change this for you, but it might give the people living there a great chance for a much better quality of life, and alot less violence

Actually I think it's beginning to happen already. Sectarianism won't totally disappear overnight, but I think after their incompetent and corrupt government has rode them for a few more years, they will hopefully realise that all 4 government parties are only in it for themselves and will look for alternatives.

Obviously I would like that alternative to be socialist but at the very least it should at least lead to a debate on the ridiculous system of government in the 6 counties.

Actually to be pedantic about it, it's not that unionists don't see themselves as Irish, they just want their part of Ireland to be governed by Britain.
