tainogirl: Why does it have to be a cross for America? Is there some other country she would rather pass this 'burden' of power onto as she recedes into the background?

boy wouldnt that be a good idea?

if we said no more outside help for 3 years -
we must tidy our garden!

but noooo we gotta be makin deals and pocketing favors for the future and frontin like we can afford to help everyone else

if america was our best friend we would say
hey man youre gettin beyond codependent
why not just focus on you for awhile and not get into any relationships?

just tell people you need some space to process and do some housecleaning and you'll resurface when you are feeling more healed?

i say this cuz i love you- you cant give from an empty well- take care of yourself for awhile first and foremost- regroup and recharge.

bob1959: I think most of the anti-American sentiment comes from folks observing wealthy, arrogant Americans on vacation in their counties. They assume these are typical Americans. The fact is, there is no such thing as a typical American. MOST of the people on my job today were speaking Spanish. Ask SUMMER UK (who has been visiting) about typical americans. I'd be willing to bet her view point is very different (and more positive) than before she visited) Come visit. Then form a educated opinion. I'll buy you a Yes, we have MUCH more than Budwiser here!

Its a "cross" from the point of view that because American politicians have decided that the US should be so prominent in the world's politics, its "ordinary citizens" are viewed by the majority of the rest of the world as being arrogant warmongers. Not true..

I am guilty of bashing the USA. Only because I am tired of Canada being bashed by the media in the US. Like the J. Leno show, etc., always saying Canada is so cold. Doesn't the US have some land way up north? Doesn't Canada's latitude dip down into the US... Always saying eh! We live in igloo's...etc., But in all fairness I also make fun of Canada. Truthfully the USA is the same as Canada...except we don't have as many people, and we are spread out more. And our highways are marked in Km's. We don't have Bubba standing at the side of the road pissing and spitting while he holds a Radar in the other hand. LOL...WE do have a nice tall Mountie in a cute red uniform saluting every terrorists through the border. "Welcome to Canada" "Did I see you getting off the plane from Afg..." NO, oh! my mistake."
If you can't laugh at yourself?

mindfful: well to be connected in that way

to be honest about history and have actual emotional attachment to it is what patriotism is

not just where your *&%^&E%^BN passport says youre from-its an attachment inside, an identification w/ our identity as a whole that makes an impassioned patriot. honesty in the face of shame. owning the facts and speaking to them and doing something different in light of those facts and history-
thats respectable-- but respect for respects sake? nuh uh-
i think maybe you are suggesting we be more courteous and/or polite to one another regardless where we hail from?

because as has been mentioned respect is earned.

Someone once said to me that respect has to be received, to be given. So its a Catch 22 situation, if youre not careful!laugh

I find it strange sometimes, that Britain is not given more flack, to be honest. The British did unspeakably bad things in history, stamped all over other less powerful countries, treated those countries' citizens appallingly, and yet seems to still hold a huge amount of respect in the world.

That, I find a paradox.

And so you should be. I´m proud of being British, I´m proud of being a Spanish citizen, I´m proud when I hear or read of certain things in the countries I´ve lived and worked in. Isn´t that what it´s all about?

There´s room in my heart for every nationality and I´m proud of that more than anything.

Hi C...wave

I admire your loyalty and attachment to your country. I admire anyone who is passionate about their country. thumbs up

The ability to make fun of oneself and one's country is a powerful thing to the good. But I have noticed that as soon as someone from another country utters the same words regarding another country, its considered offensive!

I think our inherent pride in where we come from is a great thing. But we have to see the bad sides as well as the Silver Linings.

yes exactly

i dont agree
when we can do whats right because it is whats right-thats respectable

when we do whats right for us and know we will be reimbursed in some way later that is wrong i think

its subtle but its there-the impropriety of it.

i currently live in illinois the land of backroom deals and illegal 'arrangements'

we are a laughing stock here regarding politics and rightly so

Okay so are you saying that no ordinary American gets to go into politics? Is it only the rich and elite that has ever gotten into power in America's entire history? And ordinary Americans travel the same as the rich American tourist, is it to say that only the rich tourist that can be disrespectful and arrogant? Just asking.dunno

I remember seeing many people in Britain who lived on the streets, and had no homes and had to go to soup kitchens to eat. I used to cringe every time I had to walk past them when on my way to McDonalds for my lunch.

The distribution of wealth in Britain is appalling.

But I do have to agree with you re the health care!laugh uh oh
