tainogirl: Okay so are you saying that no ordinary American gets to go into politics? Is it only the rich and elite that has ever gotten into power in America's entire history? And ordinary Americans travel the same as the rich American tourist, is it to say that only the rich tourist that can be disrespectful and arrogant? Just asking.

I am simply saying that alot of people judge Americans in general by what they see on vacation, or on the TV or what spouts out of Hollywood.

Even I had some preconceptions about Americans that were proved wrong once I lived here for some time.

DodgeBabe: Hi C...

I admire your loyalty and attachment to your country. I admire anyone who is passionate about their country.

The ability to make fun of oneself and one's country is a powerful thing to the good. But I have noticed that as soon as someone from another country utters the same words regarding another country, its considered offensive!

I think our inherent pride in where we come from is a great thing. But we have to see the bad sides as well as the Silver Linings.
Hi darling....
Of course, I am a loyal, proud, and stubborn Canadian. It depends on the attitude of the basher and they have to make it perfectly clear that they respect the country they are bashing. Fine line...contradiction. Say it with a smile.
I definitely see you point...we all feel the same way about our countries...but we need tolerance and to be able to listen and learn.

Taino, Yes, the Vast majority of American politicians are extremely wealthy. Money runs this country. period. Anyone that tells you anything else is either naive or filling you full of crap. It's money, money, money. Wealthy Americans represent the majority of tourists. Those are the Americans that you see overseas. Mostly. Oh, sure a guy like me may travel from time to time but the wealthy travel frequently and I'm sure they act like they own the place. That's how they act here to. It's unfortunate that they are viewed as typical.

bob1959: I think most of the anti-American sentiment comes from folks observing wealthy, arrogant Americans on vacation in their counties. They assume these are typical Americans. The fact is, there is no such thing as a typical American. MOST of the people on my job today were speaking Spanish. Ask SUMMER UK (who has been visiting) about typical americans. I'd be willing to bet her view point is very different (and more positive) than before she visited) Come visit. Then form a educated opinion. I'll buy you a Yes, we have MUCH more than Budwiser here!

What I find funny is that I remember the arrival in Britain of "American-Style" Diners, and take outs, and beers causing a riot of glee! Everyone thought they were very cool because they drunk Bud, or wore Levis, or spent an evening in The Hard Rock Cafe..

Probably alot of the same people who take the opportunity to bash the US when they think thats "cool" too!laugh doh

But what is a 'normal' American nowadays, isn't the face of America changing now with all the folks migrating there from different cultures, religions, races, etc... And can't these same normal americans become the movie stars, rich travelers that we see? After all its supposed to be the place where a poor man can come seeking his fortune and through hard work make s success of himself?dunno From that perspective normal Americans have more influence than they realize.

DodgeBabe: I remember seeing many people in Britain who lived on the streets, and had no homes and had to go to soup kitchens to eat. I used to cringe every time I had to walk past them when on my way to McDonalds for my lunch.

The distribution of wealth in Britain is appalling.

But I do have to agree with you re the health care!

but
if they wanted it they could get it-
it is there.

yes people are taxed for it but some is given back across the board not like here

america has been becoming a class system for about 30 yrs and this recent financial crisis has really magnified, compounded and escalated it.

im sorry folks but truth be told i am somewhat of a socialist.
im for free enterprise but there must be some controls in effect at the levels of big corporations and dammit the small business needs to be the majority and there is no excuse for the so called greatest country on earth to have so many hungry homeless citizens
and i dont mean the addicts and 'rebels' that want to be outside society i mean the one paycheck away from homelessness families that dont even have 'those problems'.

as a socialist i would sleep better knowing we were all basically cared for. everyone deserves the basics according to human decency and the constitution. food clothing shelter.
a minivan for a home and a 99cent burger aint food and shelter.

a million kids wont eat today in the greatest country on earth.
i dunno what the answer is but i dont know why we arent asking the question eithervery mad
well i do know why we arent- because the climate is such that we wanna clutch what we have and worry about ourselves lest we be next.

how one treats the least is always the most telling thing.
and what we are judged by.

JAN_is: And so you should be. I´m proud of being British, I´m proud of being a Spanish citizen, I´m proud when I hear or read of certain things in the countries I´ve lived and worked in. Isn´t that what it´s all about?

There´s room in my heart for every nationality and I´m proud of that more than anything.

yes u r so rite jan, totally...cheers

I guess a "normal" American is the same as a "normal" citizen of ANY country..

Hardworking, loyal, pasionate about their beliefs, full of love for their families and friends, more interested in how the steak is cooked on the Cook Out that evening than what is being discussed in their country's Halls of Power.

And just wishing to be treated as a decent human being in general.

You can become rich in America threw hard work, but you will also need to be ruthless, and be willing to take advantage of everyone around you. It's almost impossible otherwise.
