It's a lot easier to impose centralization of power than it is to de-centralize, precisely because all power is in the hands of the central government and they intend to keep it.

Like in the US when some states wanted to leave the Union. The government wouldn't let them leave. They said, "once in, always in", the Union is inseparable.

It's very similar to a Communist takeover. At first they say that collectivization of the economy will be good for everybody. But by the time people realize that it's a lie, the entire nation is in poverty, and the government controls all power, and the people no longer have any means by which to fight back.

This is the sort of thing that comes to mind every time I hear people pining away for a united world and/or one government, etc. etc. etc. While there are some nice benefits for Europe with the European Union in terms of travel and immigration, putting everyone's finances into one big basket always sucks unless everyone is PRECISELY as strong financially and capable of producing equally and in all other ways very, very closely aligned and equal.

that won't make anything better..but worse.the problem lies some place else for one yes we have a monetary unit caled the euro but euro is not euro..not really..look on magazines that are sold in several different countries in europe..the biggest problem is that jobs which used to pay into the social taxes and reg gov tax have been changed to a great degree into mini jobs at least here in Germany..so the country is runing up a big tab..plus high unemployment is not helping since no tax revenue is coming in..the companies are not hireing permant employees because of the high benefits they have to pay(half of health..etc.) it is a vicious cycle..and believe it or not a big fault of all this still has to do with the real estate bubble that burst in the US and the thing is..that its not over what we have experienced so far was just the beginning..the excrements have not hit the fan yet..they just grazed it..
and bringing the old currencies back would make it even worse for everyone because prices would go up again more companies would use it as an excuse to lay of workers or outsource or change taxable jobs into mini jobs..nahh leave the euro but change a few laws so companies will hire again..jmo

Many countries not using the euro are going through just the same. The USA,UK,Morroco ect, ect. The Countries that have had severe problems like Spain, that are using the euro, are in trouble because thier president refused to accept the crisis, and continued spending. Now,he is in a panic. Is down to bad managment during the crisis. One advantage of being in the "euro",is that collectively, they can support the likes of Greece and Spain, who got it wrong. bouquet
