I wanted to do something that´s bad for me, which I´ve just recently given up. So, I told a friend about it on Skype, fully expecting him to discourage me.
Instead he said: go ahead, it won´t do you any harm!
Which totally kept me from doing what I wanted to do!
So, my question is: does reverse psychology still work on you at times?? If you feel like sharing, give us some examples, please!

It is not so much reverse psychology, it is that depravation causes cravings. Well known psychological fact.
Deny anyone anything, and they always want it more. It even become a very irrational obsession for many.

I see what you mean - however, the craving is there, because I CHOSE to deprive myself of what I desire, due to it being bad for my health.
And I´m no expert, but didn´t my friend, by telling me the opposite of what I expected, use reverse psychology on me?? He encouraged me when I didn´t expect to be encouraged, and therefore kept me from doing what I had initially wanted to do...

Choosing to deny yourself something works just the same as someone else denying you. ANY denial sets up a need. Your friend just stopped your self denial from focusing on what you had wanted, by tricking your brain into accepting that you could have it if you wanted it, and therefore didn't need it.

Reverse psychology is very effective not only in a personal way as you describe but also in the workplace. We all practise it to some degree perhaps sub-consciously in many cases.
As someone who is well aware of it, and has used it occasionally, it rarely works if someone tries to use it on me.

That´s a very good point! Can you give us an example or two??
as an amateur hypnotist its nice to know muse is open to suggestion......... your eyes are getting heavy.... your clothes are becoming cumbersome.....sleep.....sleep.....

I sometimes use it in the workplace to motivate my teachers. Specific examples would be too boring to read for most here, but you understand what I mean I´m sure.
invinciblemuse: Well, it worked on me, and I don´t mind at all!
What about you?? Any examples you care to share??
I think it can work until I realize that it's being used on me, then it loses its effectiveness, for me anyway
that's what is interesting about your situation. if it had been me- I'd have prolly seen thru him and said to myself, OK that's HIS opinion, now what do I think as that is what REALLY matters
and I would have acted based on what I think regardless of his opinion - especially if it became evident that he was trying to "reverse psychology" me.
I guess the trick is to want it to work (does that make sense??).
I mean, I wanted to be talked out of lighting up a cigarette and expected a lecture about my health and crap like that, and I was prepared for that and would have gone ahead and smoked one anyway. Subsequently, in the morning, I would have felt really crap about it and I would have beaten myself up about it.
Instead, my friend took all this away from me, he just disarmed me by saying: go ahead, it won´t kill you!
Oddly, this unexpected response stopped me in my tracks. How weird is that?? I´m annoyed, but happy. All this is very strange to me...

Hm, aren´t you supposed to dangle some crystal something in front of me that I need to focus on???
