Wineman42: what about the cost of reroofing that's costly
True that! Frig all those cost.If the roof on a place I am renting needs fixing or something wrong with something else then I can just pick up and move.I have my eye on an adorable condo that will be up for rent in a month. If we can get it here we go again.

I work on the side as a jack of all trades and a price tag of 20.00/hrs so I've seen all the costs
jlw45: rent is like throwing your money in the street and watching it blow down the road...
If we were simply comparing apples to oranges, it is an overall given that renting (providing it's not a 10000 a month or more penthouse) is considerably more economical. House ownership is great, and I did for a long time, but everything is on you--an apartment or rental house is largely an obligation of the owner--new W/D, fridge, stove, plumbing, roof, painting, landscaping, and so forth. There are great benefits of owning a house, no one can impose rules about pets, guests, you have free reign for decorating and additions (with municipal restrictions, of course) but if you are talking dollar for dollar, it's cheaper to rent.
2intrigued: It's likely that the only way I will have a home again is if I meet someone who already has one (or win the lottery)
It is (in many instances) incredibly easy to buy a small 1 or 2 bedroom house at the moment in this region. There are tons of them, you have to have a fair income and about 2500-4000 cash, which is really not all that hard to get together if you have a steady, even if it's small, income.
Frankinstien: Don't sell just yet . I haven't gotten you down here yet . If you see this place it just might spoil you from anywhere else .
Hummmm now Now thats a thought....hummmmmmm U know several of my friends (they all have money, not like me of course) have bought homes in the Islands and eventually sold their homes here to be in the Islands all the time....Both friends in Jamaica have recently sold and one returned to GA and the other stayed down in the Florida Keys....The crime in Jamaica got so bad they no longer felt safe....I miss not having their homes at my disposal...sighhhhh

Where I live, the cheapest house would be around $250,000 and one needs at least 5% down to purchase

Don't know about Canada, but in America there r lots of cheaper loans available to single women, with fewer requirements. Certainly worth exploring.

I've thought of moving to the US because of the low cost of home buying but I'm not sure I'm willing to give up free health care...dilemma
I own. I like owning. But both have their advantages. If I moved I do not believe I would sell my house. It is an investment. The home is worth more now than when I got it. But the funny thing is I had a feeling this would happen when I got it but the land is worth more than the home. It is in a good location for me and for a few others too. I actually don't know why I have not sold it and moved on. Maybe it is the memories it holds. The comfort I get when I look out at the sunsetting and feel the peace inside because this is where I want to be.
