Hey folks, I'm finalising my proposal for a major writing project and I need to settle on something pretty smartly!...I have some ideas but I'd love to hear yours. We need to include a marketing package in the final draft, one which has wow factor written all over it, so I need to get it right, from the outset....no pressure!!doh

So...what type of book would you head for?

1. Novel(fiction)
2. Collection of short stories(fiction)
3. Reflections about the writer's life/travel/experiences
4. A tongue in cheek, humourous self-help book dealing with women's (mainly)mental health and well being, with writer's self-revelations thrown in...
5. Any others related to creative non fiction or fiction.

Many thanks and look forward to anyone's opinion if you get a chance.
cheers peace
any thoughts on e-books? Who buys them, or who prefers to buy hard copy books, but online? ...I buy many books online, but not e-books.

books? Gees, I use to get on the net search for books I wanted to read for years, only to give them away at the end to friends or charity. These days I’ll only download or buy one book at a time and restrict myself form dwelling into too many topics.

My first choice is Religion- not for religious purposes, I like the diversity of beliefs and culture.

Second choice is science- All types.

Third choice would be medical- not all…Im only interested in schizophrenia, multiple personalities Alzheimer’s ..etc anything to do with confusion or loss of memory.

Fourth choice would be “biographies”

Fifth would be philosophies… mainly ancient such as Plato, Socrates (The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.)laugh although lately I lost interest.

Most people would find my interests, boring, frightening and disturbing. laugh

Not in the least, AA...thanks for posting your preferences.

Essentially, they are all under the non-fiction banner, with some which would lean more towards creative non-fiction.

With the 'medical', are you referring to academic type texts or more like Oliver Sacks' fabulously entertaining book 'The Man who mistook his wife for a hat'. He's a neurosurgeon with a difference. Boy, can he write well!!

cheers
p.s. I had originally chosen the screenwriting option, but I don't think I'm anywhere near writing a screenplay for feature film or equivalent. I'm still reworking one for short film cos I have a lousy plot!laugh

I think Oliver Saks would probably come close although he does focus allot on awakening. Im more into evolutionary type of procedures. In saying that tho I am a fan of Hyman Spotlights around 1950’s, Lucy Holms (internal triangle) she is psychology annalist with some mind blowing ideas.

Talking about movies on this subject.. I don’t think anybody will ever out do “ The fight club” based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk. Have you seen the movie or read the book?

Hi venere

Nice thread wine

I'm definitely a non-fiction fan, novels leave me cold and I never read them.

Biographies are probably what I read mostly, I enjoy delving into peoples' personalities, what makes them tick and how their lives evolved.

I also enjoy travelogues, books that are written by people of different cultures, or those who have travelled through countries that I am not remotely familiar with.

Sometimes I dabble in modern philosophy, Alain de Botton being my favourite.

Haven't bought a book in a long time, I've converted almost entirely to ebooks.

The fact that I can choose a book at any time of day or night and have a sample delivered wirelessly to my tablet in seconds is a major plus. Very economical if I do decide to buy, average price around $10 and I like that it's environmentally responsible.

Other than that, I use the local library, it's cost free and also environmentally friendly .. I even borrow magazines if I'm in the mood for a trashy read laugh

Could you explain 'awakening' in relation to Oliver Sacks? Ta...
Wow, now you've got onto a very interesting topic, that of psychoanalytical theories...listening to a Lucy Holmes video now, 'Schizophrenia treated without medication'...thanks for alerting me about her. So many people poo poo Freud, but a lot of his theories are still alive and manifest in people today. Use the Rorschach inkblot tests and you know all about it.

In terms of my project, it's not allowed to be straight academic writing. Mind you, I wouldn't attempt anything of the sort, as there are so many learned people doing it better than anything I could contribute in that genre.

No, I haven't seen that movie, but will find it and do so, given you recommend it so highly. Also, the book, will do the same.

Tell me, how did you develop such interest in those topics you mentioned, such as schizophrenia, memory disorders.

Thanks for your comments, serene. I know what you mean on reading about other people's lives, particularly in how they deal with challenges that confront them.

About e-books, I haven't got into them, but I know of that young lassie who has made millions, literally, with her e-books about vampires and the like...She has done well through that medium.

I love holding a book though, but having said that, I do lots of research on the internet and d/l many a pdf file.

Interesting you mention trevelogues...I'm thinking of detailing my upcoming adventures through Puglia and my journey in how I got my lil place there. Not sure if there would be much interest though. I will give it more thought on how I could deal with the topic. it is like being in another world, though.

Why not? And have you given any more thought to your women's health retreat idea? I thought that concept had heaps of possibilities.

In response to "holding a book"..

I bought a leather cover for my tablet .. when it's closed it looks something like a diary or I can fold it and use it as a stand .. but when reading in bed I hold it open, in both hands, as you would a book, it's comfortable and very easy to get used to.

In fact, one night as I was nodding off, I went to "turn the page" at the top RHS as I do with a conventional book which was a bit weird and not very successful - old habits die hard laugh

The Inkblot test…I sometimes forget when I post that I might be talking to somebody with possible academic knowledge on the subject. Leonardo da Vinci, I believe came up with something simular…picked that up from a documentary on da Vinci. I have to agree with you, way too many people poo poo Freud. laugh They might be able to dismiss small part of analysis but soon fall short, as they all complement each other in the same way Darwin’s theory of evolution does.

Awakening by dr. Sacks You must remember the movie Awakening.. played by Robin Williams. That’s the only reason why I know who oliver sacks is. Apart from Freud he was one of the few who’s focus was on awakening, alertness, mindfulness.. etc Now you reminded me of another youtube video you might enjoy Neuron anatomist Jill Bolte Taylor. Its interesting, as a doctor and a neuronantinomies amongst all the confusion she finds herself and spirituality… its almost a tear jerker, yet educational.

So how does a nobody like myself get interested in Schizophrenia. I mean a nobody as Im not involved in any type of medicine. I just find the human brain so interesting especialy that particular area and I like learning.

anyway footy is back on… another one of my loves so I must go. laugh

About the retreat, most definitely. I need to start promoting them properly very soon on my website and maybe specific mags, very soon for the next Euro summer..such as week long stop smoking retreat or simply some R&R, with some touring around. Will be good fun. Coming?cheering laugh

Ah, Biggles!! Gee, that takes me back. I was class library monitor in year 4 or 5 I think, because I was known to love books. It was up to me to select books for the class for both girls and boys. Guess which ones I included for the girls???laugh ...to his credit, the old codger of a teacher, allowed my choices to stand.thumbs up

You know what else they've banned, and that's most if not all of the Noddy books. How dare they just because of the character 'Big Ears' and others. It's a book for goodness sake. Just like gollywogs. That's what they are called, why pretend otherwise??
