Even though scientists hav cleared us from any impact to earth from asteroid2002nt7 which was going to hit in 2019,they hav found a new threat ,asteroidqq47 which on the torino scale of impact is 1.This is reported to be heading for earth and will strike in 2014,if it hits like they estimate,it will have the effect of 20 million hiroshima bombs, decimating all life on earth as we know it.
What would you do if this ateroid hit or was going to hit?
bury your head in the sand, rob a lollie shop, ask miss universe to marry you,or maybe run to the highest mountain. This is the worst asteroid they hav found, and is no silly theory, its actually heading for earths atmosphere

Update Pebbs wave

Once again, the planet can breathe a sigh of relief. After making further observations of asteroid 2003 QQ47, astronomers now say there is no threat from this rock. It has been downgraded to a zero (0) on the Torin scale, which says, "The likelihood of a collision is zero, or well below the chance that a random object of the same size will strike the Earth within the next few decades. This designation also applies to any small object that, in the event of a collision, is unlikely to reach the Earth's surface intact." applause applause

"asteroids to hit earth"

By Irene Klotz
SAN FRANCISCO | Thu Dec 8, 2011 8:03am EST

(Reuters) - About 1,000 asteroids big enough to cause catastrophic damage if they hit Earth are orbiting relatively nearby, a NASA survey shows.

In a project known as Spaceguard, the U.S. space agency was ordered by Congress in 1998 to find 90 percent of objects near Earth that are 1 km (0.62 of a mile) in diameter or larger.

The survey is now complete, with 93 percent of the objects accounted for, astronomer Amy Mainzer of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Using NASA's recently retired Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) telescope, scientists also found about 20,500 smaller asteroids near Earth.

Previous studies estimated there were 36,000 to 100,000 of these objects, which have a diameter of about 100 meters (110 yards).

"They could still pack quite a punch," Mainzer told Reuters, adding that "any impact is not a very likely event."

But a major asteroid strike could and has happened.

An asteroid or comet between 5 and 10 km (3.1 and 6.2 miles) in diameter is believed to have smashed into Earth some 65 million years ago, triggering global climate changes that led to the extinction of dinosaurs and other animals.

"We know something that big could wipe out mostly all life on Earth," Mainzer said.

Scientists are now using archived WISE observations to home in on potentially hazardous objects whose orbits come within about 4.6 million miles (7.4 million km) of Earth.

So far, there is no plan about what to do if an asteroid was discovered to be on a collision course with Earth.

Hey Pebs,

2003QO47 ain't even going to come close. Check out the ephemeris:

It is going to miss by several LD's.

There are 1272 known PHO's (potentially hazardous objects) some of which come within less than 0.1 LD.

Sure we are going to get hit, we get hit all the time. Don't you love to watch shooting stars?

But the chances are, it will be another 65 million years before a big one hits, and human life, and the memory of the same, will be long gone. We will have poisoned ourselves long before then.

Party on Bro...

I always wander how much would we know if disaster did happen such as meteorite hitting the planet or a nuclear war?

In 2003 it was certain that comet NET, almost twice the size of Jupiter was going to wipe out the sun. It was all a big hush, hush for at least six month after the event. Here is something even more interesting, Comet NEAT was on a collision without a doubt and at the last minute sun flares pushed it away.

i read that it changed its course, becuase of it being hit by other meteorites and smaller asteroids.i posted the thread becuase for some reason thisa year ive noticed more than ever an increasing number of shooting stars .i have a meteorite,i found with my metal detector2and a half inches long, if it hit you it would kill you.sometimes these asteroids break into smaller pieces ,and fall to earth as meteorites.the piece i found could hav come oiff a big asteroid like qq47 which could be heading here.it doesnt have to be that close to be pulled into our atmosphere

well according to the video NO it was definitely sun flares. As for comets, hell yeah I see them living in the city every 15 minutes, even piercing rain clouds.

Not to worry Krista, the chance a major PHO hits in your life time, assuming you live to 80, is about 1 / 10,000. They do hit every 800,000 years or so... But a serious torino 10 event will happen in you life time is about 1/ 650,000... not much of a chance really...

But the chances are it will hit an ocean - The tsunami will be miles tall, moving at just sub-sonic speeds (near 1000 km/hr.) Having lived through a tsunami, I have nightmares about this...

But I put it aside and live for the day -Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero

or : (if you are jewish)?? ?? ?????, ?????
