Epicurus of course was a Greek philosopher who believed you only need tree things to archive maximum happiness in life.

One: you need a large group of friends with whom you would share fine food, wine and conversation with daily.

Two: you have to be self sufficient .

Three: You have to be analytical about life. Spend at least half an hour each day reflecting on your day and your life.

If you adopt these tree things you don’t need anything else to live a happy fulfilling life.

What do you think was he right?

no not really, most people can count all there friends on one hand, fine food probably at least in part includes eating your own past mothers, wine goes theee head, nobody is self sufficient all of us are or have been in one way or another dependent on others, just reflecting without a qualified guide is darn right dangerous

Self sufficient in this time and age can also mean regular income.

So self sufficient is what ever you might make of it is good philosophy then?
Feb 17, 2012 9:21 PM CST Epicurean Philosophy To Happiness
all of us are or have been in one way or another dependent on others

you wouldn't be here without a mother or others helping you from birth onwards, income implies others paying you, providing work or whatever what you propose entails dependence on others

there is nothing on this planet can exist just from its own side

Even this
peace of dirt, cow veggie garden and locked front gate one could be self sufficient to

obtain the peace of dirt

cow obtain that, would need a bull and in any event be dependent on the cow

veggie garden, the seeds, tools, water, protect the veg from birds

locked someone had to have made it

front gate likewise

nothing on this planet can exist just from its own side

everything depends on something, growing crop or vegetables has its variables. What he is saying you have to do the whole tree not just one.

Our whole country is reliant in one way or another for items we once grew & manufactured here but now import.
If there are any companies still manufacturing, they are surely working out a way to shift their operations offshore to take advantage of cheaper carbon tax free power and much lower wages.
As our manufacturing moves away, we must become like these countries and produce the food they will need to fill their bellies while working to make our manufactured goods.

Friends are great, alcohol - never seen the point in it other than to kill your brain cells and liver quickly.
Food - considering what you're eating, you could eat yourself stupid till your fat and obese, would you still be happy afterwards?

Reflecting back, I see I made a few mistakes, took a few detours and wrong turns - some of them had good consequences and some things wouldn't have occurred if I had stayed on a direct path and not gone sideways a couple of times here and there.

I think we all stray from truth along the path of life, takes lot experience to evaluate right from wrong anyway.

What he is saying, those are tree accentual things to happiness. Friends to talk to- having daily contact with people. Isolation soon will lead you to mental disorders. Good food and wine- is self achievement. a reward for your efforts. Self sufficient means- your not totally dependent on the society to provide the next meal for you.

I think this man had a pretty good idea of how we can live happily and cooperatively with one another.

I agree that eating and drinking with friends rather than alone is more fun.

Knowing that we are providing for what we need is comforting. Even better if our contribution is helping the community to thrive.

Spending time thinking about ourselves, how we relate, how we can make things better, all contribute to our own happiness and those around us.

Btw I loved Alain De Boton's series about philosophers and he has some good ideas about travelling as well.

the meaning of life is the meaning you create but not necessarily the meaning to life. I think life just is, so make the most of this gift by doing the things that make you happy without harming anybody else along the way. wine
