it is getting common to see people on street intersections with signs:(homeless).many used up or were ineligible for unemployment e.g. most states are "at will";they can fire you without real cause=no benefit/$/food.
lay-offs in factories,hospitals and larger companies turn into labor reduction so they can re-hire fewer new workers at lower wages.
people are living with relatives,parents,friends to share expenses.
there are many bankruptcies and homes foreclosed on.

$13/hr wages..40 hrs and decreasing.happens every year for 3 months.
$75-$200/mo. electric power bill (water,garbage,landlord pays)WINTER>
$75/mo. internet and satellite telephone and televison
$550/mo rent (3 bedroom/2 bathrooms..most go for $750-800/mo)no garage
you pay same for deposit.typically landlord keeps it all.some ask for last month's rent with deposit at signing of lease.relocation $,$$$
$3/gallon gas:my car gets 28 miles to a gallon.insurance $250/6 months
$90 mo medical/dental/vision/for family-can add young adults up to 26 years old not required to live with you or attend college anymore(new)

$26,000.00 401k/quarterly bonuses:2011 fed taxes $2,600 state$1,200

2.50 gallon/milk-we don't drink tap water without a filter
2.50 bread,2-6.00 for chicken,beef,salmon by the pound.
fruit is seasonal-oranges,bananas vegetables-carrots,potatoes,onions
most expensive tomatoes,greens.buy canned goods/rice in quantity/bulk
recreation-movie $6/one person, alcohol/beer$3-5 ski/$40-70 all day

Where I live, the average apartment 65m2 is about 1k Euro, but can go up to double if one add a bit of size and triple if you add flavor of the month standard.

Gasoline is about 2 euro/ liter, a dinner out is about 20-30 euro (depending on what you eat of course, fast food is about 10 euro for a burger), my personal food budget is about 100 euro/ week (could live cheaper if I made more myself), a .5 liter coca cola is 2.5 euro if i remember correctly, a heineken .33 is 4 euro, a pack of 20 cigarettes (for those who smoke) is about 12 euro. 1 liter milk is about 2 euro and a piece of bread is 3 euro.

London

Approximate prices.

Average apartment for 1 or couple sharing, £900.00pcm depending where you live in London but pricey on average, Dinner £20.00-30.00, Food budget not sure £30.00 + depends on whether you eat meat which is expensive (and I don't),
1.5 litre Cola, £1+ depending on brand, Beer hard to say, lager beer is cheap though, Cigarettes, around £7.00 depends on brand, 4 pints milk, £1.20 approx.
I loaf of bread, £1.00+ (cheaper quality bread available).

olaix: Everything is free here except dentist if you're over 20 years old. You pay a fee of 30 euro at the doctor, but its the same at the hospital no matter what you do there, police, fire department, social services etc

You just think it is "free".......There is nothing free about your type of economy,you pay dearly through the taxes that you pay. Everything is relevant ......cheers

The cost of living in Canada is very high...Im still in shock everytime I go to the grocery store. Conversely, the cost of living in Mexico is very reasonable. Everything is MUCH cheaper than Canada except electronics, Tv's computers etc. wine

Hehe, I don't think its free free, just mean that we can show up anywhere with any sort of problem without worrying about the money. Even if you never paid a single Crown in income tax your entire life. Not only health care, but say you're income is 100.000 dollar a year and you have a accident, getting some kind of disorder, including mental and can't work anymore - then you'll receive a ~65.000 check every year til you die. Free medicine etc, doctors, rehabilitation. Our system would not work with only taxes, we're using quite a bit of oil money to fund it, if not I think it would be suicide :p

The living cost in Nova Scotia is actually quite low. Except for gas. Gas I would say the most pricy in Canada. But it is because our local Government are corrupted morons.

My daughter and her boyfriend moved recently to Calgary ... and she says that cost of living in Alberta is very high. So, you are right about Alberta.

There are indexes to compare country’s cost of living. Although in order to make a “real” comparison people have to have lived or at least visited some other country (ies).

Definitely Europe is very expensive to live at.

Regarding to Latin America, I am surprised to the comment about Dominican Republic being expensive. I did think the contrary.

For other countries like Iceland even though has a high ranking (expensive). I did not find it that way.

In Mexico, the cost of living is rather reasonable and fresh fruits and vegetables are available the whole year, being inexpensive what is in season.

Some of my monthly expenses in US dollar:

$ 242 Rent
$ 190 food
$ 77 covered parking space
$ 39 telephone and Internet
$ 25 for gas ( 1 liter= $0.80)
$ 15 electricity
$ 10 water supply
$ 5 for having my little car washed.

An ok bottle of table wine can be bought with $12.
Going out for dinner would be about $20 –including table wine- (Argentinean or Italian, for Chinese would be lower).

wine

One of my children did an exchange program in Winterpeg Canada and the expenses for living there were outrageously high, especially when you eat healthful. The good thing is that the Father paid for that.

What is obscene in Canada is the taxes even for everyday’s food.

Here in Mexico the basic food have not taxes (grains, fruits, vegetables, etc..)

alonerdo: Considering that free services are few and of poor quality, 1200 euros a month, living in a nice neighborhood in the city without car.

1200 Euros per month wow it would be $20,400 pesos ($17 pesos per one Euro) that is rather high.

I think, a person can live with half that even paying rent.

Comparing…

What I did understand from your post is that you needed at least 1,200 Euros per month to comfortably live in Mexico.

My answer was: that amount is rather high. Either, you do not live in Mexico or you have not idea what the cost of life is in Mexico.

And for the highest standards of living that is relative.
A country’s highest standard of living, does not guarantee that each and every one citizen gets it.
