While I abhor smoking, I also dislike this sort of police state/nanny state legislation.
History shows that it will not work and will instead create an industry in illegal tobacco supply and sales.
Smoking should be a choice, but one that has the full set of its consequences.
My preferred course of action would for smokers to still be able to buy tobacco, but they would be refused taxpayer-funded medical treatment when the consequences of their addiction caught up with them.
The shopping list of diseases that are caused by smoking are self-inflicted injuries. Taxpayers' money should not be used to treat such people. If they cannot fund their own medical care, they can die in the gutter.

All that medical care given to smokers will do is prolong the dying process. It is money wasted. Far better to spend it on patients who are not committing suicide in slow motion.
My father died of pulmonary fibrosis in 1992. It was caused by asbestos exposure during his navy service.
When he became too ill to function at home, he was wheeled into Ward 3C of Mount Olivet Hospital in Brisbane. At that time, it was a ward for terminal lung patients, who were parked there until they died.
Every smoker should visit such a ward.
There were, as I recall, about 30 patients, all of whom had blue lips and were gasping for air in a way that reminded me of a suffocating fish.
The medical staff told me that my father was the only non-smoker in the ward. The other 29 dying men had themselves to blame for their slow and painful deaths.
I know a man who has been dying of emphysema for the past few years. He is a smoker. He continues to smoke and swears that the emphysema has not been caused by the smoking. To call him a self-deluded moron would not seem to be adequate.
Given that the amount of money available to the public health system is limited, it is stupidity to spend one penny of it on caring for smokers at the expense of other patients.

Well if older people are still smoking then young people will still be exposed to the phenomenon, and given that theres already a rather substantial black market,(due it would seem to the ever increasing taxation on tobacco)then there'll obviously still be availability,so I can't see it being completely successful,I don't believe we'll see a "smoke free generation" as I heard one advocate for the legislation claim.

Also the vast amount of the cost for legally sold tobacco is actually taxation, therefore smokers are contributing to any additional costs to the health care system, not a small amount either, and they certainly won't be if buying it illegally, also if I'm not mistaken the usage rates are on the decline anyhow,so leave it as it is I'd say.

robplum: They are like the Muslim moral police, running around telling others what they should or should not do. In my opinion people in government should mind there own business, stop stealing from my non taxable veterans income support, stop harshly judging the karmas of others, stop repeatedly engaging in mass murder all over the world. Understand they are but servants of the people and have no right to engage in discrimination, nor any right to reward some scumbag for discriminating against people nor either should they kid themselves they know what they are doing when clearly most politicians have highly inflated ego's and have in many cases never done more than talk crap there whole lives.

Take deluded feminine perception they always know what they are doing, and religious rubbish and at the very least once in there life study the nature of existence

10 years ago, I bought tobacco overseas at 1/5 of the price of it in Aust. And they were making a "healthy" profit. The tax has gone up here so much more each year. And that tax is going back into the system each year. And the biggest investors in tobacco companies are superannuation funds, life insurance companies and Govt investment.

Why would they ban it when they get so much from those who do manage to die a bit younger?

And if someone wants to get into the medical debate of 70-80 yo smokers needing high medical support, what about the 0-10 yo (and probably beyond) who also need high life support?

I have a friend who works in juvenile diabetes and the stories she tells about them would shock you. "I love my Maccas and Coke. Why should I stop when I can have a bigger shot of insulin?"

At least the smokers are well and truly contributing to their medical care.

And I wish that I never had. Simple fact is that statistics are used to define smokers and death are related. My father worked with many chemicals in his carpentry business. Now they are carcegenic.

My father managed to live to 61. And never smoked. My step-father smoked from 13 until 58 and died at 86 from brain cancer.

I drive. Does that mean that car fumes will be related to me dying at some stage? Most likely. Let's ban cars. Give someone anything and they will find some related statistic for the reason.

In 2000, the youth suicide increased by 50%. It went from 88 that year to 138. The same year, there were 2,500 suicides in Aust. And 2,000 of them were males. Mainly in the 35-50 age bracket.

And I will still say that smoking is an addiction I wish I never had.

Carl96190: So you know better that every respiratory medicine specialist and oncologist on the planet?
Decades of published science which shows that smoking causes cancer and a shopping list of other problems is all lies?
Idiot!

I know that if any study puts the wording at the end of their studies that smoking will make the condition worse then they get government grants?

Here is another study for you too look up! Until 1980 most if not all Australian schools had asbestos building products incorporated into them, I don’t know about QLD but here in WA a lot of those old schools have slowly been replaced or closed down indefinitely, why you may ask? It seems going to school in certain areas is more of a long term health risk then any amount off smoking! And the government are the last people who will put their hands in their pockets and admit that they got it wrong?
You only have too look at the recent figures off the increased rate of asbestos related deaths in home renovators to realize someone dropped the ball years ago and the easiest way to cover it up is to blame smoking related illness? I have been passive smoking since birth, actively smoking since I was 13, three years ago I had a chest X-ray for a fractured rib, the X-ray came up clear of anything other than the fractured rib? But the doctor still tried to lecture me on the harms off smoking even after he just had me standing in front of a machine full of uranium? I them lectured him on how the buildings I was working in had asbestos walls and roof and that large amounts off formaldehyde were used in the production line, that he should be concentrating a little more on that than someone who smoked?

Just ask your self’s this, why is it illegal to grow your own tobacco? When in some states you are allowed to grow your own dope?

Hey Wash, tommorrow will mark the 4 yr anniversary of my last ciggarette. It one of the most addictive drugs there are , our mind and body will fight our common sence just for one more drag and when we take it , its not as great as anticipated but it does feed the beast,& that nagging pang deep in our soul is quite for 20 mninutes or so....
I gave up using the drug Champix , for me it worked took the pills stopped , no craving no pangs , no drama.
If the goverment proceeds with this plan our grandkids will never have to feel that nagging pang of withdrawal a generation of tabacco free people wow !!!

Interesting to note...

last week the government in australia won the right to force cigarette companies to use green packaging....

at the same time the judicial system in america stated that the government there does not have the right to force cigarette companies to put all those pictures we have on our packs now onto american cigarette packets....

in dubai last week i bought 2 packs of cigarettes for $5...the cost here for the same packs is $28...work out the maths for how much the government here makes out of smokers and then say we cost them in medical care doh

yep Im a smoker and yep id like to not be..but by my choice not the nanny government declaring it be that way...mumbling

kizzy27: It has been proposed that In 6 years it will be illegal for anyone born in the year 2000 or after to purchace ciggarettes as It will be illegal.

Keeping in mind that people who already smoke wont be affected It just attempts to prevent children from starting, knowing that how people get hooked on nicotine. Ingenious.
I cant see that even smokers would be against it , After all we all know the health risks.

What do you think?

I am all for it.i smoke.am sorry i started.anything to stop the cycle is fine by me all for it

Just look at the advances off smoking now with the quit campaign!
We now have beer gardens at pubs so we can take the kids!
We now have outside alfresco coffee shops, so we can have a smoke,
We now have our own sections at the casinos?

We just have to get the bloody stupid non smokers to piss off before they ruin it, as no mater where we go, some a**hole non smoker will want to sit with us and complain about the smoke?

It really used too piss me off at my last place off work that the none smokers would take up all the chairs that were for smokers?

Its about time you non smokers took up a hobby, like jumping off cliffs, that will be the only time you will ever get over the fact that smokers have rights too!
