yeah your all the same, when my father died is cheek rotted away and his throat to, yes he smoked, but he also drank sprites to, in every event his demise was his karma to endure. I don't doubt his smoking created a lot of the problem but to say it was the cause or sole cause would be just plain stupidity
You should get a grip of your emotions and stop being so loose with your thoughts

Rob, smoking is a stupid thing to do. And I am very emotional about this addiction. But I do not believe it is the sole cause of many of our helath problems. Just that so many stupid people use the statistics to prove their case.

My father was a non-smoker and worked with timber and related products and died of cancer. Why haven't they done the stats on timber workers and cancer? Simply because it is a "good" product while so many do not like people having some enjoyment in life.

curly28: Robplum you are getting off the subject what you are saying is a whole new story unrelated to the thread SMOKING
Thats never happened before on an Aussie thread , both my parents were heavy smokers ,Mum started at age nine and did not stop till she went into a home at 90 odd . Although she had lost her mind she never forgot that she smoked . 94 when she died . Dad started later in life as an adult . He died age 71 , young for his family . When dad had his first heart attack the Dr said to him "I am not going to tell you to stop smoking as you have done the damage " .I would have liked him around to see his grandkids , having my brother and I late in life made that even harder I guess . sad flower

In the age of imformation

Ignorance is a choice.

When so much eveidence is apparent some measures need to be implimented to protect people from themselves.
Many people are born with addictive personality traits, If Herion was legal there would be junkies on everystreet however because of the rapid & immediatly apparent detrimental effect that herion has on peoples health & lives it is banned.Smoking has been now proven to cause disease in the human species, its effects can be not onlt inflicted on the direct recipiant but also those in the immediate vicinity!! Remember people this wont effect you!! But it will stop your grandkids embarking on a life of addiction.

In New Zealand we are going smokefree by 2025.
I wish I never started and to this very day am amazed I actually started as all my childhood teens and early twenties hated smell yet thru smoking in hotels was permitted started in mid twenties though smoke very little.I hope that your country can have success and good policies to help futrue generations though sometimes get pretty annoyed with anti smoking policies and news.I know habit stinks.

Obscuritan: What has Christianity got to do with smoking? You're not making much sense rob.
Far be it from me to defend Christianity but sometimes your crap goes too far.

Obs, it is one very obscure reference and I agree, very hard to see what Rob's reference is about. Maybe go down the track that the churches probably own or control tobacco and hence making money as we 'christians' don't give over our tithe these day.

But like many other philosophies (?), there are ways to deal with a habit. Just takes the strength and conviction to follow them through.

And yes, the Buddhist vs Christianty sometimes gets on my nerves but the similarities of thought are there in both.

Think about this: they propose to ban smoking and at the same time others suggest we look at legalising cannabis and ecstacy. I suppose we can argue that cannabis is less addictive than tobacco and in the quantities usually smoked, less damaging to general health (as opposed to mental health.)
The crims would love it; they can move straight from cannabis to tobacco dealing.

Jane Halton PSM, Secretary Department of Health and Ageing
Jane Halton is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the Department including the provision of advice on and administration of Medicare, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, Aged and Community Care, Population Health, regulation of Therapeutic Goods, plus hospital financing and Private Health Insurance. Prior to her appointment in January 2002 as Secretary of the Department of Health and Ageing, Jane Halton was Executive Co-ordinator, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) and was responsible for advising on all aspects of Australian Government Social Policy.

The Rudd Government today announced a comprehensive package targeting smoking and its harmful effects, including an increase in the tobacco excise of 25 per cent.

This increase in tobacco excise will provide an extra $5 billion over four years, which along with existing revenues from tobacco, will be directly invested in better health and hospitals through the National Health and Hospitals Network Fund.

The Government’s anti-smoking action includes:

The Disbandment Christian Anti-Smoking League now the New South Wales Society of Non-Smokers

The recent election of Dr Julian Lee as President of the NSW branch of the Australian Medical Association (AMA)

Actually there are more harmful toxins in cannabis than in tobacco and yes cannabis is additive just ask my ex brother in-law, doctors studies released just last week linked cannabis use to permanent brain damage? Go figure! And if the Australian government used just half of the revenue from smoking tax just for hospitals alone we would have the highest paid nurses and doctors in the world, and our hospitals would be newer and cleaner than our casinos! Another industry that is taxed too the hilt,

And another study released just this week, 90% of Wittenoom children have contracted asbestosis, they are just waiting for the other 10% to show symptoms, and you people still believe the government? Its like those people that look at accidents on the side off the road but in this case your involved but you haven’t woke up too it yet?

This is not just to you Obscuritan but to some off the other people on the band wagon to blame smoking foe everything,

Yes smoking is harmful too some people as is gambling and drugs are to others! Alcohol can also ruin life’s! but the worst harm to human life’s is incompetent governments shifting the blame and collecting a extra unnecessary tax! Just like the carbon tax!

Mate, you are like me having a legalised addiction which the Govt can tax to the hilt. And studies have shown that the "working class" people are the heaviest addicts. So as the current Govt is supported by the "working class' it must mean they support their habit in propping up this Govt.

I commend you for walking your cat on a lead keeping tabs on puss and it's whereabouts. Last night I got woken up by two cats having a full on fight in my front yard, then they kept fighting all the way up the road, cats should be kept in a cat enclosure and walked like yours they kill our beautiful birds and little critters of a night because too many ignorant owners don't care what their cats get up to by night very mad really pisses me off. cats meow Blizzards happy cat lucky puss to have caring owners cats meow grin thumbs up

Well it’s the kids cat really, we used to let him out the back yard to terrorize the insects, but now he is almost one so he can jump the fence, he got out one night and caught a mouse from next doors house, as the neighbour has a stack off building bits he has stolen stacked under his illegal pergola that is next to my fence, the mice love it, so after the fist time the Cat caught a mouse he wants to go there every time now he gets out, he is no longer allowed outside without the lead, by the way the cat didn’t kill the mouse he just brought it home inside to play with, much to my daughters dismay, she was jumping on the kitchen bench screaming a mouse? So I had to catch it and put it in the bin outside,

By the way I don’t like Cats, just this one as the daughter loves him, I don’t like Holden drivers either! but the daughter has a boyfriend that drives one?

At least we don’t have any crazy people live next door to us? Except for the drunk lady that knocked on the door half and hour ago, who lives next-door, apparently the kiwi kids down the road have pulled out the sticks that were holding up her new plants $50 worth apparently, which are all totally stuffed now,

I did point to my Bonsai trees, well there not real Bonsai plants but I have a rope tying them all down together, sure you can pull one plant up but unless you want to drag the other eight along behind you your going to need a truck!

Now go on you know you want too! Ask me what breed of Cat do we have that walks on a lead?

rivame: Interesting to note...

last week the government in australia won the right to force cigarette companies to use green packaging....

at the same time the judicial system in america stated that the government there does not have the right to force cigarette companies to put all those pictures we have on our packs now onto american cigarette packets....

in dubai last week i bought 2 packs of cigarettes for $5...the cost here for the same packs is $28...work out the maths for how much the government here makes out of smokers and then say we cost them in medical care

yep Im a smoker and yep id like to not be..but by my choice not the nanny government declaring it be that way...
there was a study in the news over here not long ago that said that because smokers die so much younger than non smokers they are actually saving the govt money in the long run because they dont claim the pension as they are dead
