Mauss: Discussing the individual makes and models is as useful as discussing the rights or wrongs of your favourite colour.
It comes down to personal preference.
The days of a specific brand to be bad or a lot worse than others is long gone.
25 years ago no one would touch a Skoda.
It was a joke, now Skoda's are regarded as more reliable and build to better standards than its owner Volkswagen.
I assume you'll be buying second hand, in this case it comes down to luck more than model or make.
Find the car you like and do a search on the specific flaws of the model.
For example older models of the Cordoba would have a flaw that it would let the radio switch itself on.
Highly entertaining when you didn't use the car for three days and want to drive off.
But things like that are model and year specific and not one car maker will be flawless.
Keep an eye out for a full service history. It can be a better indicator than a low mileage.
Good luck

Thanks Mauss
I am not fussy once it is reliable and cheap to run and tax!
The days of picking what I really want are long gone and to be honest am glad...."austerity" has a lot going in its favour sometimes!
I will read up on your helpful link thanks again.
Hope 2014 is kind to you and yours hug
