kidatheart: Yeah, you can, and I've tried and enjoyed it. Mind you, I've tried home made wine made from almost everything that grows here.

I've also picked fruit, mushrooms, and berries of every sort, whatever grows wild or even from a few neighbouring gardens.

Last time I went berry picking was blueberries, and I ended up with 2 grizzlies and a black bear on the same slope I was on, without even realising it. I think they were eyeing up my bucket of berries, and thinking I was an easy mark, but thankfully there was plenty to go around, and they left me alone to slink off into the woods, away from them.

Hiya kid cheers

If you saw a bear wild in Ireland, you would be more likely to die of shock than of a mauling rolling on the floor laughing

Jaysus, the auld floods must have hit yiz hard down in cork. sad flower laugh

ON a serious note, black berries... and me grandfather used to dig up a big dandelion everyday when they were up and eat the stalk section, .. that's before the root but after the leaves and just under the ground level. He said it was good for me. uh oh

The black berries you can put in a soup bowl and just add milk and mash them with a fork. Lovely. It's a long long time since that was done though. Like... when I was 5. laugh

LadyBlackAdder: Does anyone have experience of foraging for wild food and cooking it, even simple stuff like putting nettles into soups and picking wild dandelion leaves for salads. It's coming into the season where all these things are plentiful again and I wonder what use, if any, people have made of them.

I find this time of year a great time for foraging for men, now what use could I make of them I wonder, innocent

WittyandWise: I enjoy thinking about men

But this is the nettle thread with absolutely no disrespect to it. There hasn't been a "man" thread for ages unless you count Phoenix "girl on girl" thread but he sees himself as the only man in that scenario

stanley8m: I live in the countryside and make use of the natural resources. From hazelnuts, wild fruit and berries to dandelions, nettles, edible plants, leaves and fungi. Have you ever tried Cattails? They are widely available and surprisingly tasty.

Below is a website providing some information, I would be a bit dubious of their claims on acorns, I have tried them before, and no matter what way you soak, boil or cook them, they taste bloody awful.

Hi Sally, dunno if this helps, but i did a bit of work at 'seed savers' in scariff in county clare, its a horticultural centre, and they are well up on all things growing, you might give them a ring and they would have some 'tie ins' with growers and interest groups around the counties...could'nt say if im allowed to put up phone numbers here, but im sure a link is ok....

Ok, good luck....

I don't know of any foraging courses around here, as most locals would have acquired trans-generational knowledge of wild edible foods. I would suggest you avoid fungi that could be confused with some of the more deadly varieties. I wouldn't like to see anyone make a lethal mistake. hug

Or on second thoughts, there can't be feminist chefs.

Just think of the mayhem that would result from asking a feminist chef to make a sandwich. laugh
