MarketWatch declares today: "It's official: America is now No. 2".
That is, the US is, according to the IMF, the second-place country when measured in "national economic output in “real” terms of goods and services." Given that China has well over three times as many people as the United States, one should really be asking "what took so long?" The fact that China hasn't been in first place for decades is just a testament for how horrible under-developed that country has been for a long-long time.
With more than a billion people, China should have an economy that is much, much larger than the US economy, but since worker productivity is so low there, they've not just caught up with the US. Of course, a far more useful measure of an economy is arguably the per capita GDP or the purchasing power parity measure. And in this, the United States ranks near the top, but is certainly not in first place. Excluding the oil rich dictatorships which are populated largely by temporary foreign workers, most of the countries that top the list of per-capita output are small countries like Switzerland and Norway, plus the microstates like Luxembourg and San Marino. Depending on which list you use, you'll also find Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and Austria near the top of the list. China is far down the list.

I'm curious to see what the needed environmental pollution controls, when/if implemented there, do to China's economy.

Dont forget about Canada The Neutral country Canada recently had talks with China. If you look up what they were about you can go from there. My take is there is nothing to worry about but yes the agenda is to keep people scared so they turn a blind eye.

Save yourself I cant explain I just happen to live in a most affected area of developement and have a heck of a good memory. Things will get better globally but I may be 98 years old before I see that. Assuming I live that long.
I'm certain the Chinese communist party cannot be trusted to implement just and honest governance in china never lone anywhere else. Its currency isn't even traded on the international stage, its occupation of Tibet opens conflicts right across the glob, including fueling conflict with India from within Pakistan. China's conduct in the South China Sea is outrageous, its string of Chinese built Ports across the Indian Ocean is dangerous intimation towards freedom of passage to the international seaways.
World best bet for something other than a major international conflict is EU and Russia formulate a new world order governing international settlements and trade I think.
Russia has now got into bed with Egypt Hey yankies its a long way around the Horn of Africa. America, Britain and the NATO flunkies should kirb the proper gander and start working towards peace instead of devision I think...

So, when Germany's economy overwhelms and dominates the rest of Europe, the Fatherland will jump in bed with Russia? Would be too weird even seeing the Fatherland in Mother Ukraine again.

Nonsense EU isn't just Germany, talking about international trade and settlements instead of American Republican inspired ww3, which is what Regan New World given legs by Bush and Co leads to. America should work towards the betterment of world not its own selfish interests even if that is supported by lunatic's in Canberra, London or other European Governments. Last time America and Britain pulled New World Order according to Disneyland more than 60 million people died.
Its time countries started working for the benefit of the world as a whole, not selfish un-fretted greed by a few religious nutters.
Fatherland, Ukraine to my mind = Vatican, and anybody with any sense can see that's utterly unacceptable. And though America just upped the anti by announcing more favored relationship status with Israel that move leads to conflict rather than any peaceful outcome.
Russia and EU to my mind is best chance to stop the ball that been rolling since 1991, Russia and China...unthinkable.
France's soft stance on Russia may abort the looming World War III between Russia and The West with political experts saying that France mediation is significant in many ways. With French President Francois Hollande meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin on Dec 6, Russia finds another Western Ally after losing Germany, experts concurred.
felixis99: just to clarify - we do not want a new world order here. It is not a popular concept here (not that I am aware of - or in any majority way)
we are the USA and successful because we have RESISTED pressures from outside countries to define us
not many have resisted anything here in the last 30 years otherwise would not be a debtor nation, would not have the largest prison population in the world, would not be overthrowing sovereign governments, would not have a the largest drug population in the world courtesy of banks and gubment, would not have co.s like monsanto lobbying public servants, would not have patriots and Christians on the homeland insecurity watch list, could go on and on, dont include yourself into WE, we who what where
