robplum: Established in 2007 by the Australian independent community based Men's Sheds to represent, support and promote the Mens Shed Movement and to act as a central hub for information exchange. The Australian Mens Shed Association is funded by the Federal Government to provide initial and ongoing practical support for the development of all Mens Sheds.

I might be completely worng here but it is my belief that the Mens Shed was established because men had such a great link with other men...until the day they stopped working.

For some reason, women have never really had those continous links that men had through being in the workforce all of their lives. Women tended to have children and drift in and out of the workforce as it suited their circumstances....having children, looking after children when they were sick, establishing those lifelong inter-female relationships.

And when men decided that after working from age 15 to 65 that they needed to annoy their spouses, they were told to go and make some friends outside of the home.

And, yeah. Some of the guys have always wanted to be able to do some of those skills but for one reason or another, did not get around to undetake them.

Obscuritan: Yes it does almost sound like fun.
I'm not on this site as much as I used to be, Happy. I guess I lost interest a bit. I've gradually started working longer hours, mainly for something to do.
I was keen to get into online courses, (MOOCS) but couldn't sustain the interest and effort required.
I understand losing interest in it. You enjoy your job. grin

In the video it shows where they are using those skills to help their community. I think that is awesome. And productive thumbs up

I grew up with a father who had for many years a joinery shop and later managed one for a very large company (dad was a large shareholder of the company). But having a brother (2 years older) who was also more adept with his hands compared to me (the bookworm), it did mean that I did my best to avoid a lot of the skills I should have learnt from my father.

On saying that, me & ex #1 did acquire an inner city property that required major renovations shortly after we were married. While dad was horrified that his "fool of a son would know anything about doing the sort of work required," it is surprising what one does pick up along the way without realising it.

Tomorrow, after enjoying the morning breakfast at my local Mens Shed, I will be donating a lathe and an electric blower (for clearing out the shavings) to them that I have but do not use.

And maybe one day I will learn how to use a lathe.dunno

Probably someones eyes will light up and will happily share his lathe using skills with you Wash

My father had one where he had dug-out workshop under the house. He turned Electric Light Stands on it and started a business sharpening Push Lawnmower Reels on it...

Aw you don't really need those skills, you've gotten by this long. laugh I have been thinking about this mens shed thing. And how it is suppose to get you out amongst people. I prefer to stay to myself. I have friends and go places. When I want. Other than that I prefer a quiet life and spend a good bit of my free time puttering around my home with my dog. Just the two of us. Is that kind of life style unacceptable in Australia? Would they send me to a womans shed if I was there? Being around alot of prattle would make me a nervous wreck blues

Same here Happy thumbs up laugh

I live a simple quiet life also, me and the dog lol.

I've never been one for hanging out with groups of women but I don't mind the idea of a Women's Shed (there are such things here), a drop-in kind of place where you can come and go as you please conversing
