Hi Epirb and Robp... wave thanks for topping up my thread.

Last Sat I put my camera on overload with my grandsons (mr 3 )birthday party...

so, on Sunday, I gave it a rest.. and went back to tending the garden, and planting..

I planted a ( God wish me luck) a Tree Peony, a dwarf lemon tree and a pomegranate bush/ not a tree size yet... but not a weeny one either.

The Mulberry tree has outdone itself, and you can just about get drunk from the smell of rotting mulberries... way too much to handle. the Peach tree looks like its going to burst with all the fruit on it, and I hope the birds help themselves, because if they all ripen at once, lawd help me.. the apricot tree is chockas too...

The only reason I plant fruit trees is to taste the proper taste of the fruit, not the rubbish that comes from the supermarket.. grin

But my interest is in the bees that land on the lily pads in the fish pond for a drink at the end of the day... that really fascinates me..

Next Sunday I am off to a photo shoot at night ... for Light photos.. I have not done this before... you know, take torches, and all sorts of light creating things to make effects in the dark.. will see how I go. cheers cheers guys..

oh, I forgot to ask...

I use Melathion for control of those stink bugs that eat all the flower buds ( mainly they live on the holly hocks, but will hide and breed in the violets, and spinach and anywhere else that they manage to find dark and damp... ) those bugs love hibiscus anything, and being I have a heap, of the mallow plant, I tend to not be able to get rid of these bugs.. I control then they multiple, so its this never ending circle.

anyway, I was pondering on the bees and wondered if they hurt the bees... ( yep, you got it, I sorta really like bees, have always wanted heaps around)

I plant Echium for the bees, and thankfully, I never spray that, as I don't need to... the stink bugs don't seem to bother it..

The articles I have been reading this last half hour, suggest that Melathion does... the only thing I have always done tho... I spray just on dusk, when the bees are away.. but I always did that to avoid the smell for the children that live around the place.. you know, to protect the kids, and the neighbors cat etc.

I know that I need to put a cover on the fish pond when I do it, if there is even a trace of wind... but it never occurred to me that the residue might harm the bees the next morning..

What are your thoughts on this... ??

Thanks wave

I've become quite a fan of Tea-tree oil, i use tea-tree oil soap for my monthly showers (only dirty people wash laugh) 25 cakes of tea-tree oil soap purchased on eBay actually turned up today.
Anyway tea-tree oil is readily available, try mixing some tea-tree oil in water and spray tat and see whether that moves them on

I have not tried Tea-tree oil... and I guess it would be a great smell... however, again, I don't know how you can move them on... if they go next door, then they will run back, as next doors are lazy gardeners, and have stuff all as garden... jmo... grin

This is a delicate little thing... it took a good year before it flowered, but was worth the wait.

Merriweather: Hi Robp...

I read all of that before going to bed last night, however, that the smell of garlic is not liked, it does kill off the bugs..
that is my issue...

Those stink bugs, they mate for 7 days, and then produce hundreds of others...

My garden is way to big to continually spray smells which will repel, I need to do the killing fields thingo, but I just don't want to harm the bees...

So, what do you think, if I spray latish at night, when the bees have gone, do you think that would be fine with the bees...??

I guess that was my question all along..

I don't want to harm bees, or detract from them coming to do their pollen hunting and cross pollinating..
We are not allowed to spray flowers at any time as the government has reorganised the role bees plat in the grand scheme of things . Spraying stems and the folds in plants with ripcord will send those stink bugs to the happy hunting ground . Kills on contact if its strong enough within minutes . I painted some neat onto window sills to deal with flies once , I can confirm that it works to a tee but would not recommend painting sills with neat Ripcord as it melted the plastic handle holding the foam thing I used to apply it with

Thanks Robp for the addition of the wild sweetpea and dandelion flower..

Nice work...

I have been watching a video on HDR... and I don't know if I like it or not... so far, doing that hand held for me, just produced a lot of blurry shots, so
I will have another go..

How do you like your HDR feature??

cheers wave

OH and for Mr Epirb.

that stuff , I looked it up... sounds right dangerous... grin

Never said it was available in Aus that I could see.. no worries.. I wont be using it.. wave

HDR, is that movie?

I made a diamond firetail movie clip is only time i tried it. Didn't get it quite right but was impressed with the cameras ability to zoom in on the bird while doing it

Holding by emmm, practice, practice and more practice, for me am i think improving and really is only way to go, never any time to setup a tripod so though not perfect better than none

Hi Robp...wave

The video bounces a bit, and if it wasn't for that, it would be perfect, but in general the quality is fine... and the bird is so very cute..

Thank you for sharing

also, HDR which your camera likely has, is High Dynamic Range and it takes 3 shots, one under exposed, -1 one at 0 and one at +1 and processes it all together to form one shot.
then

I downloaded this program tonight called DxO Optics and used some of the presets, and from there you pull it all into ( I used Corel) but that or Lightroom or Paintshop ... which ever you use... then you get a really good play..

Ths is one I did tonight.. using all of the above..

So, tonight I have been playing around with lots of programs, but I was using a trial of Photomatrix, which is fun, simple little program for hdr but it leave a copymark on the photo of its own name.. damned annoying really..

yeah pay money and there name will go away

No i don't use any of that, spent six months setting the camera up to photograph birds. However in saying that, recently i changed the camera to make and save a fine-large image rather than jpg-jpg as i had also purchased a supper fast SD card that writes at a speed up to 280 MB/s (SANDISK EXTREME PRO II 32GB – CLASS 10 SDHC CARD – 280MB/s read, 1867X write) and set camera to burst so it rapidly fires between 3 and 5 shots every time i take a photo.

I only use Google Picasa program to crop and manage folders, limit my interests to capturing birds, flowers, animals and the odd scene...

Yes, in that you are right, and if you don't do graphics, that is fine.. I am constantly encouraged by my photographer friend, and if it wasn't for him, I would not have known how to access certain programs... although, I did a computer graphics course for a year, back a long time ago...but that knowledge is not helping too much now.

I have not still chosen which way to go with what I want.. the Photoshop that I used back then has changed so much now, and I think I am leaning towards Lightroom, because it does seem a lot easier... but for the moment, I have CorelPPro so that is fine.

So this is my family of pets.. some are mine, and some are my son's who has left his lot here since Jan..
