That is a fine example of why I got into the habit of compare shopping.

Pumpkin pie is my specialty. I started with a recipe from a 1920 cookbook and have spent years perfecting it. I don't use canned pumpkin, only real pumpkin that I bake and scoop out the flesh and I blend my own spices. Of course I use my own free range eggs also. That is why I bought 2 pumpkins because this is the only time of year you can get them. When I bake these 2 pumpkins I'll have enough pie ready pumpkin to bake about 24 pies.Never tasted pumpkin (on bucket list!)

"PICK YOUR OWN PUMPKINS"
Well, I made a quick turn into their driveway to get a deal on a nice fat pumpkin for cheap. The cheapest one they had, other than those little decorative ones was $3.99 + tax. It seems they were all picked and in a bin so this pick your own deal was a ruse. The one I got weighed 10LBS.
Later on I had to get some things from the super market (Walmart) and saw they also had pumpkins for $2.99 + tax so I bought another one. This one weighed 17.5LBS.
The lesson I learned was don't think that just because some business is going to offer you the opportunity of saving them a little of their labor that you're going to save a few coins.
BTW, the Walmart size pumpkin would have cost $7.99 at the farm stand, plus tax.

Given that Aus has embraced Halloween over the past several years, pumpkin prices go to an all-time low at this time of the year Ooby
At present A$1.50 a kilo which equates to around US40c a lb or around $7 (inc. tax) for the one you purchased at Walmart

I'm glad you chimed in.
I'm not really upset about the price I paid for the "little" pumpkin although it shouldn't have cost more than the supermarket one seeing as the big one had to be shipped by truck maybe 100's of miles and pass through several middle men, nor am I upset about being led to believe I could "pick" my own. The joy of picking your own does not lie in bending over and lifting a heavy object from the ground whilst getting mud on your shoes, it lies in the thought of getting something for a lower price. I'm sure there's no difference in the quality of said pumpkins.
I'm all in favor of buying direct from the grower/producer, I'm in the same business as the farm stand with my egg business.
I just don't like allowing myself to be lumped in with the Yuppy tourists.

The lesson I take away from this is that sometimes the small business person, farmer or lemonade stand in from of the home, do not have the mass resources to do price checks, buy in bulk, operate on a grand scale, and can lower prices on some things because they can charge lower prices below market on some things and raise the prices on other things.
So if this little "pick your own" had gone to Walmart and did a price comparison, they might have been competitive. And as far as the pick your own, they really should have done that, left the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch.

I don't know how pumpkins grow - if it is like potato or root vegetables, then no because the ground is too moist and it usually rots.However, it is above ground right? I think in northern Florida?
My friend from Palm Beach area, dressed up her little child, age about 18 months in a pumpkin costume and put her into a roadside stand selling tons of pumpkins, and you could not really see her at first, because she blended in so well. So cute.
I don't know if the vegetables were locally grown or imported from a northern state - like they do the evergreen trees during december?
