For short flights of known destination & when I don't have checked language: isle. I want to be out asap, and not bother someone if I want to go to the restroom or so.
For long time: window. I am sure I am going to sleep. I am going to put a pillow on the side & I don't want anyone to bother me. There is also a bigger chance for amazing views when you travel to new destinations.

When booking with enough time yes people can choose seats but later it is whatever you find.
If the flight is short I would prefer a window, if the flight is long I would prefer isle so when going to the bathroom I do not have to rub people knees and they do not have to look at my “eyes”.
secretagent09: WOT !! You've never been on an airplane. Do you know how many nuts in a little bag you've missed.
Last week a rich woman refused to stay on a plane when they gave her the nuts in a bag instead of on a plate.
Nope, never flown...I begged my husband for us to go on a flight and he refused to fly. After the divorce, he flew to California. As far as nuts go, there's plenty walking around and they're not even in packages.

The first time I flew was on my honeymoon in 1962 to Hawaii in first class
It seemed that they were constantly feeding us. Back then the food was very good. I remember having eggs benedict
Many years after my divorce I was flying Peoples Express to Virginia for a rendezvous and that's when they started serving a bag of nuts

I flew last November and didn't get any nuts
You're lucky...my honeymoon was a two week camping trip in northern Ontario. Sorry to hear you didn't get any nuts when you flew the last time but like I said, there's plenty walking around.

as long as that aisle seat isn't the one at the back next to the loo...
Have you ever had to board a plane when the attendant says to board by seat number starting with the back of the plane and the people with seats near the front of the plane ignore this instruction and stand up and crowd around the loading aisle and the people seated in the rear of the plane have to elbow their way through this mass of stunned humanity in order to board?
