It's not quite been the stampede many anticipated this year.. Maybe a combination of online shopping & a category 4 terrorist alert , kept many bargain hunters relatively clear of our capital.

This is my understanding (anyone feel free to correct me..) "Black" indicates in accounting, that you are "ahead of the financial game". So, "Black Friday" has come to mean, in America, that you are going to be offered huge savings on just about every consumer product, and therefore, be "ahead of the financial game", or, "out of the red and into the black". My personal experience is that it is sometimes true, (the actual savings) but all too often it has been discovered that the pricing is rigged a little, and several weeks or months prior, the prices are inflated so they can be deflated on Black Friday with no loss for the business. People love a bargain, so they visually "see" one with this method. I never make sales purchases on Black Friday. The week before and after Christmas, here, is more likely to be one of true savings, especially the week after. (Merchandise is often half-price, for REAL). There are schedules made for consumers that highlight the best times/months for certain purchases. For instance, automobiles tend to be marked down considerably in September and October, and linens, etc...are almost always marked way down in February. Just a few thoughts....btw, dear friends-- develop a good habit of resisting buying stuff. It looks great, but all too often we really don't want or need it, and wish we had our money back. Be wise in this, and you will be so much happier. I promise. I buy at second hand stores and yard sales at times, and it is pennies on the dollar.

Alas. I come from this ideology....and it is capitalistic and materialistic in nature....nothing like saving 50 % off on something you really DO NOT NEED! Maybe someday a TRUE black Friday will come along,...where one has no money to even provide food for ones family arrives...

allthegoodnamest: I understand your ideology and in many ways you're correct in your thinking but we are talking pre- Christmas sales , a chance for many underprivileged parents to purchase presents they may have not being able to afford with the overinflated prices at this particular time of the year..
Now if you're talking January sales, well that's a different story.
I understand. I just want people to be careful in the spending, and make the money go as far as it can. If people shop around, and get an idea of what things are actually worth on the open market, they will know if they're getting a deal or not.

Black Friday isn't really a thing over here. Few deals here and there, not much.

I'm an impatient shopper , the reason I let my daughter do my Xmas shopping. She saves me bundles on the shopping but her fees are exceptionally inflated. It's a no win situations really

Black Friday is in other countries too.

Origin of the term

"Black Friday" as a term has been used in multiple contexts, going back to the nineteenth century, where in the United States it was associated with a financial crisis of 1869.

I agree with you,, usually the europeans are trift spenders,,
In France there's a very important amount in the savings deposit.
Government try to encourage the people to spend and support the economy through consumption, the interest rate of savings deposit has been brought so down, but it doesn't work,, people transfer their money to any form of savings except spending.

I think most have already set aside for this seasonal spendings.
