Hug a tree. ( Archived) (60)

On the serious side...

Ohia's are possibly the oldest trees on earth.

I have an acre of mostly Ohia forest; and I'm a tree hugger, who hasn't cut any of them.

I love my little piece of the forest too much to harm it.

Recently, our island has been hit by "Rapid Ohia Death."

Thousands of acres of Ohia's are dying in a matter of weeks.

The disease began south of me; and it spread north of me.

Please pray for our Ohia trees: our whole ecosystem depends on them.

Aloha aina. Malama aina.

I only tried to answer the question once, the other two were accidents; but, if your tree left you, it would make sense to bring it up in every thread.

Every time I hear about "Rapid Ohia Death" on the radio in Hawaii... None of the scientists talking about it, call it "Ohia wilt."

But maybe you know it more than everybody they interview on the radio.

HOW TO REPORT SUSPECTED OHIA WILT/RAPID OHIA DEATH
Posted on Jun 16, 2015
“A highly virulent disease is spreading through Hawaii’s ohia forests on Hawaii Island.  As researchers try to determine how to control the disease, residents on other islands are being asked to look out for any similar symptoms and report it as soon as possible.
The fast-spreading fungus is referred to as Ohia wilt (Ceratocystis fimbriata), also referred to as Rapid Ohia Death (ROD), and it causes the crowns of mature ohia trees to turn yellow, then brown and die within days to weeks. The fungus also causes dark, nearly black, staining in the sapwood along the outer margin of trunks.”

I was curious to know the cause of the disease, that was all.

Never mind.

I'd like to point out that I said, Ohio's are "possibly" the oldest trees on earth.

I read that over a year ago, while studying Ohia trees.

I think they count the life of an Ohia like this... Ohio's often grow in shallow soil; and when they get big, they fall over... but that doesn't mean they die.

My yard is full of giant Ohia that got too big, and fell over; but most of the branches that become verticle when the tree falls into a horizontal position, grow into more giant 500 year old Ohias, without the 500 year old horizontal mother tree dying.
