Because of the war in Syria:

Death toll 400,000
11 million Syrians have fled their homes (half the population)
5 million refugees went to Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, etc..
1 milion refuges went to Europe (mostly Germany)

"Syria has been under siege for ( 6+) years now and the havoc created by Jihadi forces has seeped inside the very soil of the country. Millions of people have been displaced and are currently seeking refuge anywhere but in their own homeland. Thousand others have fallen dead.
And many sites of historical importance have been reduced to rubble, as if they never existed in the first place."

I am not sure how to deal with Syria. I do know this is not a concern of the U.S.A. It is a Middle East problem and those in the region should settle it. As Trump was campaigning, he said we are not the world's policemen. Then he attacked Syria. Let the Middle East take care of Middle East problems

I've just finished reading On The Other Side by Mathilde Wolff-Moenckeberg.

It consists of letters she wrote to her adult children overseas during WWII, but couldn't send because of their honest content. Her and her husband Emil Wolf would likely have been shot, or sent to a concentration camp had they ever been discovered.

The images that you have posted, Life, mirror the images the author conjures of the destruction of Hamburg. I can only surmise there is some similarity in the respective peoples' experience - the fear, the starvation, the illnesses, the fleeing, the oppression, the losses and grieving for loved ones, the depression, the lethargy, the fight to survive each day, each moment, to name but a few.

Lest we forget? I am continually enraged by this phrase and feelings of my own impotence.

American warplanes strike convoy of Iranian-backed pro-Assad fighters who ignored Russian instructions and advanced on a US-backed rebel base in Syria

Jets fired warning shots to stop the convoy of Syrian and Iranian-backed fighters from advancing - but it was ignored. The coalition said 'apparent' Russian attempts to stop the group, which had come to within 17 miles of the base, also failed.
Syria condemned the strike as a 'brazen attack' and said it would 'not be intimidated' after the surprise assault.

Jac

It is pretty obvious the purpose of wanting to destroy a culture (besides de economic interests) when you see all those bombs dropped on the ruins of a temple and the stadium, same in Iraq and now missing thousands of historical/art pieces Humanity's Heritage (of course with the hundreds of thousand lives lost just like in other wars).

I have said that "I have had it all in life" but recently I was reflecting on it and no, thankfully I have never lived in a place with a bloody war on and I hope never will.

What it takes to have empathy with the victims of war?

just a heart.

Middle Eastern folks must like conflict, because none of them do anything to stop it. They get into power, and do exactly the same bad things the previous guys did. They can never be like the Germans or Japanese (to a lesser extent), and admit they did the wrong thing. And so it will continue long after we are all gone.

We (the rest of the world) can only do so much, and unfortunately getting involved means bombing and killing. There's no point just turning up in a football jersey with a soccer ball.

The only 2 alternatives I can see are- Leave them to it, nobody goes in nobody goes out... Set a date for total and complete annihilation by nuclear weapons, if they cant make some kind of agreement amongst themselves.
