Hi Jess:
Myself and my two lab assistants examined the specimen you provided. Spectrum analysis of the metal fragment you supplied determined it is composed of a mixture of molecular Iron, Dysprosium and Mercury. These metals can not be mixed together in the presence of a gravitational field. It must be further noted that on Earth Dysprosium does not exist as a free naturally occurring element. Stress testing of the fragment revealed the metal has a tensile yield strength of about 175,000 psi. This is more than 3.5 times the average tensile strength of carbon steel. Testing of the electrical properties of the material disclosed that at temperatures from -300 C to 500 C no measurable conductivity of electricity was observed. However, at 511 C a critical temperature was reached and the material suddenly behaved as a (previously unknown) very high temperature superconductor. The material was heated to 4,000 C in an effort to determine the melting point. No change in coloration or tensile strength was noted and the material continued to behave as a high temperature superconductor at all temperatures above 511 C tested. Our laboratory is unable to produce temperatures above 4,000 C so the actual melting point of the material remains unknown. . We attempted to X ray the material at room temperature and a previously unknown effect was observed. Using a XD6 X-ray powder diffractometer (cabinet model) the material initially seemed totally resistant to the X rays. However about a half hour later radiation detectors alerted us to the far side of the material emitting the missing X rays. The material is neither transparent nor reflective to X ray radiation, but for want of a better term can be described as 'translucent' to the gamma radiation. It passes through, but slowly. X rays were emitted from the obverse side of the material for about 15 minutes at a noticeably slower rate than they were initially applied to the material. Due to a lack of proper equipment and no true understanding of what we are looking at/dealing with we did not test to see if this effect was present at the full range of temperatures our lab can produce when smelting metals. Needless to say the three of us are both perplexed and very excited. We are maintaining confidentiality and have not conveyed any information about this to anyone outside our facility. We are unanimous in our belief that fabricating a supply of this material is beyond the current scope of human technology. We have place the material in a gold storage vault where armed guards and heavy security are present. The custodians believe they are guarding a small bag of gold coins. Please advise me of what you wish done from this point. Needless to say any information you can share about the origin of this metal fragment would be greatly appreciated.
