Good old days, bad old days?...

Then, we made our own fun, used imagination, rode bikes everywhere, fell over and got back up again, called each other names and got over it, ate what was on the plate, sat down to Sunday dinner, said our please and thank yous, chewed gum and read comics, went to Saturday morning cinema, had teachers who shaped our very lives, people in sport, the arts and even people in political office who stood for something worth while, this, a list I could go on with until the sun rises in the west and sets in the east....

Now........

I enjoy life, and I'm grateful for many of the new things that have come along in the last twenty years, but it's come at a global and human price...
We have heralded in the age of dumb, the lowest common denominator, the friend artifical, social influencing, an always on society / mentality, a shift away from the practical to the theoretical... If the Internet died tomorrow, the conciquences would be sizemic... It would be in a strange way, it's own modern society version of an 'extinction level event'...

I am a dinosaur, that's obvious, simply from raising the subject/point, but I can't help but wonder if we'd have been a better off race, had technology just stopped at the compact cassette...

Discuss if you wish.....

"" I can't help but wonder if we'd have been a better off race, had technology just stopped at the compact cassette""

I agree. Maybe we should of stopped prior to the cassette. There is a lot to be said for the Amish life, IMO. They stopped in the 1800's before the invention of the zipper.
They seen the evils of technology coming and separated themselves. And have a more "natural" life.
(I think humans were meant to live in clans)

Now we have mass surveillance, little to no privacy and A.I to worry about

*Not going to debate the advantages of technology... with techies... blah blah blah ... yes, we are using it right now roll eyes *

I believe history will remember 1945 to 2008 as a golden age for humanity but it come and goes like the seasons. All will come right in 100 years time, don't worry about that.

I am glad I live today but taking some values of the past with you isn't a bad thing...
I am a strange combination...
I need to be dragged into 21 century when it comes to trivial stuff (I am rubbish at movies, actors and famous people, phones and so on) but my mind is leading me one step ahead into the future when looking for life changing possibilities...

Obviously technology changes constantly and I understand of why my late husband had to purchase books to keep up on it.

From what I've witnessed out in public adults and kids alike have ear pieces plugging their ears while either talking or playing games on their mobile phones.Couples not communicating with one another anymore but messing around on their mobiles.People driving their vehicles while texting on their mobiles or eating food.I see so much of it that I want to grab their mobiles and throw them over a cliff.

I remember the first computers, i was involved at the time with the manufacture of LSI, we ised to make integrated ccts for memory etc. my first home computer was a sinclair QL with 5k of mrmory. i remembet when one meg of memory was quite expensive . I remember the rollercoaster of development until now 2 tetrabits is common in laptops. My only regret is I won't be alive in 100 yeas time to see the unimagianable development .which will surely take place.

Wish I was born some 10-15 years before, than I would have seeing the upcoming from the hardrock and metal. Black Sabbath started in the year I was born, Alice Cooper was already busy and Led Zeppeling came a year after Black Sabbath. Bet I missed a hope good music those days, and see what crap we now have all the time in the pubs.

Living in the Future,
But I'm begging for the past.

That's when we had the good things
But, those Never seem to last.

Oh please just last.

Every era is more technically evolved than anything that had gone before.

It's good to have experience of the past, but also embrace the present. Best of both worlds.

I guess what I find disconcerting is how much has been lost with the march of progress...practical/manual skills have disappeared to be taken over by a world of IT skills... People have never been more disposable in the workplace than they are now... We are not in control of the technology that we have developed, the tech is in control of us, we don't think but for having ideas thrust upon us from every corner pushing us to buy from observing our internet searches... We are observed, scrutinized, discected and sold to the highest bidder (up until gdpr that is)... We drive everywhere, have everything delivered, the choices of purchase bewildering, 30 types of bread down an aisle, where once it was brown or white, sliced or whole... We have gotten to a point of frailty through over sanitizing our environment and our own personal space... We are ingesting the very plastic that we are polluting the oceans with, we're looking at a crisis with the bumble bee population, due to destroying their natural habitat, to the point where China is now enacting a hand pollination program...
Maybe I'm all wrong, but when a mobile phone costs 900 euros, a pair of Dr Dre headphones cost another 300 euros, and then you have to step over the rough sleeper on the way to your morning latte frapacino, we /society have not moved forward, we've moved inward...

All well and good. What you like at building mud huts? Molly looks like she might be difficult.

rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing typical man, run at the first hiccup tongue As for the original topic, am a bit of a dinosaur myself, while I enjoy the ease of ordering online/ internet banking/ online dating, there is less social interaction, very few know their neighbours, the shops are simply a marketplace rather than a place to meet the locals/have a chat. It seems all interactions are online, are people becoming more isolated & lonelier?
