Can anybody outline the benefits to come out of landing on the dark side (always faces away from the Earth) of the moon? Other than demonstrating that they could do it, I see nothing of any value coming from it going forward. In my mind it's nothing more than a stunt.

less influence/noise from the earth. for starters.
rather fixed position. no fuel needed. predictable rounds. less space junk around.

If they were able to take pictures of the stars, that would allow any celestial navigator to identify their position, that'd eclipse the Apollo "landing."
