galrads: What does this saying mean?
“I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you for the part of me that you bring out.”
? Elizabeth Barrett Browning
I think "The last Duchess" by her husband Robert Browning is relevant too!FRom "Manmeet Singh 3 months ago" "This poem is a great example of the power of narratives in shaping the way we see the world. Not only does Browning critique his own society's values, he leaves us thinking about the treatment of women in both his time and our current time, obviously alongside his comment on the battle between the male and feminine gaze."

"Whene’er I passed her; but who passed without Much the same smile? This grew; I gave commands; Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands As if alive"

pKrema: I am kind of conflicted with that statement... If I need someone to bring the best out of me does it mean I can not be my best when they are not around...? I will love you for what you already are and not because of what I can make out of you...
The freedom to live as one wants.. before the 1960s there were Victorian rich kids intent on defying the expectations of society. Romanticism and the choosing of partners around whom all sense of responsibility and restraint dissolve to the ruin of posterity. Decadence rising.
And this is the difference between William and Harry. There's the noble path to aristocracy and there is a modern celebrity path to aristocracy the former is a tradition where the latter is effectively appointed by the least amongst us. One is a role model and the other is a fluffer.

I think this statement hits both signs of the encouragement coin. Someone could be acknowledging encouragement or someone could be giving encouragement.

To me, it's a heartfelt way of expressing appreciation towards someone who is a part of your life whether it's a partner, friend, teacher, mentor or anyone else who has had a positive influence on you.
