I think you have to be brought up with it...I sent a jar of vegemite to M4 from Canada..She had a smell then tossed it back in her cupboard..Knowing her she probably tossed it in the bin ------ This thread is Archived ------

It reminds me of when my step-daughters first stayed overnight and for breakfast they said they wanted marmite on toast ... Had never heard of the stuff … I opened the jar and tried not to gag at the smell of it (first thing in the morning), then after buttering the toast, spread a nice thick layer, like a really generous helping of jam!
I had no idea! 
and same as I put on a brave face with the smell, they put on a brave face on the "thick layer" trying to eat it in spite of the fact it was burning their mouth 
Fortunately their Dad came into the kitchen, spotted the over laden toast with marmite and scrape off most of it
Saved them from further torture!!! They couldn't believe I'd never heard of marmite
