galrads: the legendary guitarist and co-founder of Van Halen -- has died after a long battle with throat cancer
I'm beginning to think that Mick Jagger and the Stones must be drinking something that makes them immortal. You very rarely hear any of them complain of heartburn, nevermind something fatal.

RIP Eddie... for a while you were every guitarist's idol and every girls' w*t dream.
Can you imagine heavens choir now?? Lots of big names up there.....teddybear

i was working extra shifts at a production job and one of the women I worked with had top-tier Van Halen tickets (Portland). Well, there was mandatory overtime that day, and the supervisor would absolutely not let her off. She forfeited her job to go to the concert.

may be a little off-topic, but since I mentioned it ( and I didn’t “ need” that job, I was moonlighting from nursing so if the job clashed with nursing, I would walk...) do you think it was fair for them to terminate her? I know there are two trains of thought on this: they couldn’t “ do” for her what they couldn’t do for everyone. BUT, people have other things to do with their lives besides work—-just wondering what you think or how you see this. ( I think it would have been fair if they had her work her mandatory overtime another day, as it cropped up at least three times a month...what is “fair” here? What if the whole shop had Van Halen tickets? Just one of those CS questions...professor

I would say this..... she probably didn't pick up the tix last minute therefore had time to ask for the time off and given the employer a heads up.
I had people come to me at one job and tell me that they couldn't work a Christmas because they were flying to see family. I asked when the tix were booked and was told 6 months ago. If they didn't have the decency to ask for time, I didn't have give it to them. She quit, the union agreed with me. All's good.

Well, I see Eddie playing guitar with Gary Moore and Dimeback Darrell, while Lemmy and Cliff Burton are playing the bass, John Bonham and Keith Moon on drums, and Ronnie James Dio on vocals.

not sure how the law is now, but at that time, at least in Oregon, a company could require overtime with a two- hour notice. ( if you worked day shift and were scheduled off at 2:30, they had until 12:30 to tell you. And, like many other unfair laws, a previous promise doesn’t count—the employer holds all the cards.) I liked mikeys comment—she was looking for work when she found that one. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but in the U.S. there are hundreds of rules and laws that are ignored. For instance, it’s illegal to terminate an employee because of age or tenure. They do it ALL THE TIME. handshake

Fair?? She wasn't thinking about being fair to her employer when she booked the tickets. The only way I would have let it slide is if a family member had a longterm illness and was on their last breath on the day of the show. Other than that, I would fire her if she didn't quit.

"People have other things to do with their lives besides work". That's a callous comment Ro. When I worked that job had top priority. And because I was there 10-12 hours a day when a family member was very sick my boss always gave me the time off with pay.

Quitting shows her immaturity.

Ah if they sacked her for that then they're obviously not good employers. Here it's against employment laws to force overtime on employees or to sack them if they refuse (unless it's changed). We have pretty good employment laws here in Ireland but the goddamn American multinationals(wouldn't you know) are doing their damdest to get them reduced....thankfully we have a very strong trade union set up here too...Had that girl been working here she could have just said sorry...I can't, and that would be it...someone else would probably be only too happy to do it...

the arguement that the whole place could have tickets is a silly one...they clearly didnt so if the employer is the kind who'd use that kinda crap then she's as well off working else where...
