Is it a matter of just being social or is it something else? I’d like to know what all their drinking we read going on over there is all about before covid travel-limits are lifted.

I guess it's because of the past. When the cities where big, but the water wasn't clean enough to drink everybody drunk beer. With less alcohol, I believe, and the rich people drunk wine. There was nothing else to drink I suppose.
There are different drinking cultures across Britain.
There are four countries, different class cultures, lifestyle cultures, different histories, many different nationalities, belief systems, personal tastes, etc.
PeKaatje: Guess all had to do with the industrial revolution.
During a period of the industrial revolution here in Wales, coal and steel workers were given one day off a year as a treat.
The binge drinking culture in Wales now, where people zip from place to place downing drinks rather than savouring them, has left me wondering if there is still a mentality of cramming as much as possible into their leisure time.
tomcatty: I agree and it is a long-established custom.
Schoolboys used to be given beer as part of their main meal in English public schools.
Really! That drinking in schools wouldn't work well with our marksmanship and archery classes. I used to put away a little sacristy wine when I served as an altar boy while growing up catholic.

If the Irish don't stop this bread making mania that's taking over the country...we wont have any yeast left to make beer...It's waaay past funny now

it might be fun to at least try the most popular drink in each of the four countries in Britain while there. I think I want to soend more time in places like the British museum and learn human history, art and culture during the British Empire era. I especially would like to see the Parthenon marbles the Greeks want back

galrads: Yes and my favorite sipper is cognac. Louis XIII cognac is especially good but i savor it every omce in a while given it cost ~ $175 an ounce here.

I noticed also that the binge drinking cramming as many drinks as possible was connected to "the bell" … in England pubs had "last orders" time! When the night was still young! So people had to cram in as many drinks as possible before last orders … before moving onto clubs for the rest of the night but drinks there would be more expensive so better "drink up" before getting there
