Good grief people. I don't EXPECT a cashier to pack my groceries. Just as Tom and someone else said it is common store practice in the United States for the casher to pack our groceries.
I don't know why the intelligent people on CS don't understand that my thread is not about me wanting her to pack my groceries. It IS about her refusal to pack them in a reusable grocery bag versus a plastic bag that the store provides which is a bag that will go in the landfill and be there for 500 years.

secretagent09: Yesterday I was in the grocery store. I took all the items out of my basket and put them on the conveyor belt for the cashier to pack into the bag that I brought with me so I don't have to use store plastic bags.
I'm in this store 2 or 3 times a week but have never gone to this particular cashier.
She said "I can't pack your items in a bag that came from outside because I have a 91 year old mother and I can't take a chance with Covid". She said "I will pack them in a store plastic bag". WOT !
I said "You are willing to pack everything that I touched into a plastic bag from the store even though you don't have gloves on. That doesn't make sense." She's still glaring at me.
She looked at me as if I had the gall to ask her to pack the groceries in my bag. So I said I will do the packing which I don't mind doing because I don't want certain things crushed but there wasn't a place for me to balance the bag so I struggled. I paid her and off I went to the store manager.
When I told the manager what happened she said when Covid started they had a policy not to use bags that come from outside the store but now it's up to each cashier if they want to stick to that policy.
I shop in four different grocery stores and I have never been told that the cashier isn't allowed to use my grocery bag that I brought into the store.
Did this woman have a bug up her @#$%^&*? Did she get out of the wrong side of the bed? Did she just want to be obstinate towards me?
You reported her to the manager, that was nasty, what if he sacked her, Her poor mother 91 year old.

Stress causes us all to behave in different way I know I’ve sometimes said something or done something and thought why did I do that or realise something didn’t make sense . Maybe she was just having an off day . Sometimes it’s better to be kind then right.

Thank you Butterfly. You understand the point I am trying to make. Perhaps the cashier is under stress and worrying about her 91 year old mother. I still think she could have handled the situation better.
secretagent09: Don't get yourself in a twist. I didn't REPORT her. I asked the manager what is the rule about cashier's touching reusable grocery bags.

We’ve all had bad days and acted badly, some time or another. It’s human failing. We must overlook— let a lot go...it’s hard for everyone. Jmo
As a general rule here, stores offer full service. They figure they should do something to justify their high prices. Walmart has some self service. Do you get a discount. Nope. Maybe I should go unload the semi and stock the shelves too? It is the price of doing business. This covid has driven folks batty. I went to town. Wore double masks and vinyl gloves. Under 50 cents, keep the coins. I am following the safe at home idea. Then you see people who almost kill someone not wearing a mask. Or a herd of people partying on the beach. When it all started rules were set out. One of them was no re-usable bags because they were in people homes and cars and could be carriers. Then there was take items out of bags outside and wipe down with disinfectant. Wear masks. Wear gloves. Then it changed again. People hear what they want. And rationalize what they think. Common sense is lacking in some. Like the saying...penny wise and pound foolish.
