galrads: I am thinking of starting out with a 100 gallon aquarium or 50 gallon minimum tank with turtles, manta rays, piranha, gold fish, eels etc.
Clearly you're not thinking Galrads , some of them will only try to eat the rest...and it'd be cruel to imprison most of them in such a small tank as well.......
No, nearest I ever had , actually they weren't mine, they were my childrens' , two goldfish, pinky and perky and my youngest thought it'd be a great idea to give them a bath using washing up liquid ....the funeral was very sad..

Yeah i bet the funeral was sad. Pinky and perky were probably to small to throw in a frying pan.
galrads: I am thinking of buying an aquarium for my home. I am interested in learning what others who have owned them think about the time involved in the care and maintenance, type of fish and other aquatic life, using fish sitters etc.

This can be a wonderful hobby, but it is very, very time and labor intensive. You’re looking at three to five solid hours every day—the food alone is a big concern, keeping the ph balance, cleanliness, h2o circulation…also, in the upstart, species will just up and die, with no apparent reason. Compatibility is an issue…I’m not against having a home aquarium, but just be aware. Ask yourself if you need to be away, do you have a caregiver? If you become disillusioned or unable/unwilling to keep it all up, would re-homing the creatures be available? Most shelters will not accommodate water pets, especially now. Many water pets, frogs, fish, salamanders, turtles** are far more intelligent/sensitive than once thought.
** I can’t find enough words to advise you to NOT keep sea turtle (any) in captivity. Absolutely NOT. They need the ocean for a home…they will not do well at all.
