I take pride in knowing that anyone, with the right amount of determination and hard work can make a decent life for themselves and their families. And, I take pride in knowing we have come a long way in the past 200+ years and have the potential for continued success.
America isn't perfect in any way but it's my home and I feel comfortable and secure here.
blue_eyed_blonde: i am just concerned about the peanut butter, dont care much who thought of it...but all my thanks for the invention...
lol I am not ... really do not like Peanut butter ... Peanuts do not grow in Russia.
Seriously ... what part of American culture I do like the most: .... Blues and Jazz ... Rock n'Roll ....you making an awesom contribution into Musical World with Rock and Heavy metal.
Your Science fiction writers I would consider them to be the best in the World.
Science fiction and horror movies which are made in USA are the best too.
Just "Event Horizon" and "In the mouth of madness" "Silence of the lambs" and Red dragon", "Aliens"
Antonio Meucci developed his apparatus for voice communication in his home on Staten Island
Whooptie Doo!
22 inventors developed incandescent bulbs prior to Swan and Edison. However, it was the Americans who developed the most economically viable product that included an entire power grid, with generator, main feeder, etc. etc. blah blah blah
The first buildings and towns to use the products commercially, and residentially were in.....nevermind. Nobody Cares!
so you did your home work Diogenes ... How is it outside? Sunny?
well who was born in edinburgh that i always thot was american? his birthday is this week...
as far as certain accomplishments by 'americans' some of those were new americans which transplanted here from elsewhere-as all americans at their roots did and still do...
i am grateful for many inventions, including the toilet. i dont see what value my pride lends to such a thing- that qualifies almost as propaganda...
but being proud of such accomplishments? i dont get that-since i had no part of it. seems weird and almost yukky to me to claim pride in stuff i had no hand in. i know at times when co workers have taken credit in my work i have never appreciated it.
how many wonderful inventions have been perverted in some way? im not responsible for those things either but i might be a bit sad or disgusted...
mstrouble! exhausted on WEDNESDAY!!? well girl-color me envious

i have seen this happen in other countries as well human rights are for humans and deserved by all
i do agree progress will continue
it is where i am from too but i feel reasonably comfortable and secure anywhere but that comes from internal discipline
Antonio Meucci born florence italy, april 1808 moved to havana 1835 moved to NYC 1850 invention practical 1860 died 1896 (not sure he ever gained citizenship)
so where does one draw the line on who IS american and why do we feel proud of others' accomplishment? its too close to 'cultism' for me i would have rather used a word that feels more accurate but feared i might be scolded for using a 'cultural' reference.
i feel grateful or appreciative but not proud they did it good for them
As an American that has had the opportunity to travel a great deal of this world, I've had the opportunity to see many nations in good times and in bad. There are many things that make America different, not always good and not always bad, but certainly "ever changeing". We tend to be brash and opinionated ... but not out of anger, it is more out of pride. Over the many decades we have lead the way in helping the less fortunate, even when our own economic future was in doubt. We tend to put our troubles and mistakes right out in front where the rest of the world can see them and occasionally, on a few rare occasions, we manage to muster up enough courage and humility to admit it when we are wrong.
Probably the most significant and impressive thing I have noticed throughout our history is the orderly transition of power from one elected person to the next. From the best to the worst of our leaders, we have always kept in mind that time in any political office is limited and a deviation from that will not be tollerated. Our press remains free to say what they think, no matter how rediculess or ridiculeing as are we to speak our mind, no matter how it sounds.
As a Native American (1/2) I have learned the painful history of my ancestors, but my own life has been filled with accomplishments, education, and the ability to help others in need. While our country isn't quite as revered right now as it once was, we all know that with a new leader comes a new opportunity to once again rebuild that image of a nation that all would like to visit and most would like to become a part of.
America remains the largest melting pot of the worlds cultures and with any luck it will remain that way forever ....
oh and ps diogenes beautiful subtle job posting that w/o quoting me
i stand up for my beliefs, not saying they are right or wrong.
especially since the op was asking for feelings, and no one's feelings are right or wrong- my feelings ARE and they are mine and anyone else's opinions of my feelings are null or moot or whatever i should be saying here
and i am mature enuf to directly respond to someone here if thats what im doing- not any undercover stuff.
mindfful: The Blue Text is Mine~Dio theres nothing anyone can say about the above post should have stopped here then
i think most of us here take each others posts and opinions at face value-each is as valuable as any other the OP asked for feelings and stance pretty sure that's not what it asked i shared mine a character assassination may not have been in order wasn't my intention but thats not my deal-i didnt do that Oh really?
you so often do this to varying degrees w/ members here. i find it a bit surprising and definitely unattractive. What's this then?
a person who would behave this way- of what quality and maturity is this person,And this? and why would i let them dictate my self image? i know who i am and i share my feelings honestly.
not everyone understands me or identifies with me, but it IS curious why someone would act like this in response.
i dont get it.
ive never suggested people should think feel or act like me i try not to be rude even if i do disagree and im not smarmy-today is my turn? oh well.
my intention was to respond to the op,Never noticed i feel comfortable that i did that in earnest if it had some bearing on you dood, im unapologetic.
oh and ps diogenes beautiful subtle job posting that w/o quoting meWasn't it though?
wow youre so coolI agree with you on this point
Don't take things so personally. The main point of the post was to illustrate that, ego can manifest itself even when we attempt to supress it. It wasn't actually a personal attack on you, although you did help me illustrate the point quite well. The "OP" asked Americans what are they proud of in America. I am still not convinced that you ever addressed that. Instead, from my point of view, it seemed more like a high horse dicourse on the detriments of pride.
I admit, that I do take some special delight in kicking the feet out from under people's high horses. But really, I don't have anything against you, or you beliefs. And I still think that many of us, in an attempt to be spiritual, have just fallen into a different sort of ego trap. Like it or not, you really helped make the case. Thanks! No hard feelings!
