I mean if the internet didn't exist. My guess is that we'd be out somewhere, bar, a walk, on the phone. Reading a book. Enthralled in a hobby with more enthusiasm. We have become a "Cut & Paste", society. Google has become our brain, single sites our surrogate loves. I'm not complaining, I'm adjusting to the illusion, so many beautiful women, so much space between us.
The whole of society would be where we were in the 80s. I wouldn't get half the stuff done at work that I'm able to do because of the internet. CS, for me, is a mental escape, although it becomes emotional too, if I allow it.
I'd miss the use of it at work. Would I miss the rest? Probably not.
Most likely I'd be reading a book. Or if the weather's nice (which is rare in the NW this time of year) I might take a walk.
I'd not be hanging out in a pub, that's for sure. I grew up outside bars waiting for my parents to finally get enough alcohol in their system that home didn't seem as much like the prison that it, in truth, was. Wherever you go, there you are, doing life, and trying to pretend its not a sentence from on high.
Freedom is not out "there". It's in "here". The internet is a tool. Nothing more. It can be a prison, an escape, or a means of expression. But fundamentally, the knife is not at fault for the wound it inflicts. The mind behind the knife defines its purpose as either good or evil.
Love is not the answer. It's the question as well.
gentlepaws: Bodhi wrote, 'Freedom is not out "there". It's in "here". Maybe "In here", is a prison.
If that's the case, "as above, so below."
It's our perceptions that imprison us. Our tendency to think in finite terms. Out "there" time and space bind as surely as chains. In "here" sorrow and anger and fear are the handcuffs of our soul.
Why, love? Because, love. When we can reduce our days to this simple Q & A, we'll no longer suffer from our perceptions. The infinite nature of this path is scary to some. They shrink from the cleansed doorways of perception, because what we see once we get the cosmic windex in action, is not just who and what we are, but who and what we ARE!
Probably I would be folding the laundry sitting in front of the TV watching a movie with my kids. Or ironing their uniforms, instead of running to get them at the Chinese laundry where I take them to have more me time (translation: let the chinese press the shirts while I sit in front of the PC and chat )
Or sitting outside in the terrace with a cold beverage... Or at my mom's house, chatting with her and my sister.
Or reading a book, instead of listening to the audio-book on my way to work...

i dont wanna think about life without the internet. its a way of socializing with tons of people with out leaving the chair. but if there was no internet at thins point id either be reading sleeping or watching tv.
On a day in and day out basis, I would do as has already been mentioned by many....read more (although I still read a fair amount even now) and probably watch a bit more tv, because my time on the Internet is my entertainment time. I would just turn to the other monitor for my entertainment. I get out often enough, spend time with friends often enough, travel and just take walks often enough.
The most difficult change for me would be the loss of email and online banking and shopping conveniences. Living abroad while all of my family remains in the U.S. is so much easier to do in these Internet days (unlike when I was growing up and we lived overseas under my Dad's employment). I can communicate with my loved ones instantly through online chat options, less instantly but still very quickly via email, and can even talk to them through my computer. Christmas and birthday shopping or ordering personal needs online is painless and so convenient. And, finally, I monitor my investments and transfer funds and do my taxes and....well, yes...I would greatly miss the Internet!
