CHICAGO (Reuters) - Middle-aged adults who smoke tended to perform poorly on tests of memory and reasoning compared to nonsmokers, adding to the list of reasons not to smoke, French researchers said on Monday.
Analyzing previously collected data on about 5,000 British civil servants, the researchers found those who smoked were more likely than people who never smoked to be in the lowest-performing of five groups in tests of memory, reasoning, vocabulary and verbal fluency.
Smoking was associated with mental decline in middle age, as it is with dementia and a host of physical ills later in life, they found.
"Smoking in middle age is associated with memory deficit and decline in reasoning abilities," concluded Severine Sabia and colleagues from the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in Villejuif, France.
Compared to smokers, people who said they had quit cigarettes were more likely to adopt healthier behaviors, such as drinking less alcohol, being more physically active, and eating more fruits and vegetables, Sabia reported in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
The participants were aged 35 to 55 at the beginning of the study, which followed some subjects up to 17 years.
The study also demonstrated how difficult it can be to conduct long-term research on smokers: more than twice as many smokers as non-smokers refused to take the memory test again or were not able to be re-tested, in some cases because they died in the interim.

Quite how anyone smokes these days when the evidence is right there that is clearly not good for you is beyond me.I watched my mother die of the effects of smoking where she was down to 25 per cent of her lung capacity, and still she wanted to smoke!!!
Please everyone, for the sake of your health, you children and grand children, please give up the habbit before it makes you another statistic. It takes years of the back end of your life, ages you considerably, and costs you a fortune.
Please, pretty please with cherry's on top, give up.

Wow. This is a loaded topic. Some of the people I love the most in my life have chosen to smoke...both my sons, my dad, my best friend, and many more. I love them unconditionally, period. Their choice to smoke changes nothing. BUT...when I sat in a hospital waiting room waiting to see if my dad was going to live, watching my mom in so much grief...yeah, I was pissed. I want the people I love to stick around...I want the people I love to live full lives (and mindful's post clearly reveals that there IS a difference in quality of life, aye?). It's about love...not judgment.
its not a choice its an addiction you dont stop til youre done and not w/o detox and some tools
good lord
good for you queen of emotional acceptance
i mostly posted this for a forum member here who is in the process of quitting but i couldnt put her name in the title as thats against forum policy
a news article on a loooong term medical study expanding on previously known FACTS shouldnt be considered a loaded topic...its just passed along as information

hi mf!!
good thread, even though it highlights the disadvantages of my addiction.
tried various things to quit smoking, but none seemed to work for me, as I'm still addicated!!
somebody recommended hypnosis to help me quit. still mulling on it though.
The report does not surprise me, cigarettes are so so bad for all aspects of our health.
I wish for all smokers to quit. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug and is difficult to beat but the good news is it is doable ie not impossible.
I battled for years with the addiction, I was an erratic smokers and was on/off them all the time. Sometimes I would only smoke when having a drink at the weekend. I never did smoke till after 6pm then I could smoke a fair few as I would be telling myself 'I will stop tomorrow' and so on.
I was always giving them up and the last time I stopped I stayed stopped. I don't even know when that was exactly, just that it was years ago now.
It was the single most best think I ever did in my life, well that and having my three kids.
I just wish everyone the same chance as I got, I have never looked back.
Good luck to anyone who is addicted you too can stop its not impossible............

Sorry to hear about your broken ribs (very painful) but at the same time it is a great opportunity to stay off the smokes
it is tough in the beginning ie first 3weeks a little less tougher when you reach the 6 week mark and so on
it does get easier with each passing day until one day you notice the whole day has almost passed you by without thinking of the dreaded weed.
it is normal to feel agitated go with it, don't fight it (awareness is a great thing)
eve1woman: Wow sounds horrible 2000 chemicals oh how mean is that and we have to pay for the privilegeIt's a cool thread It might help someone contemplating tackling the addiction and that would be a good thing
I wish anyone who wants to stop all the luck in the world.
