KHD100: It's your right to smoke, it's my right to be able to breath. A middle ground area for the issues would be nice, but since humans have a problem with what area to comprise on...
all I ask is to be able to walk someplace with out having smoke blown in my face, or be picking up butts from idots that think my front yard is their ashtray.
Indyfella: Lock yourself in the bathroom and turn on the exhaust fan. Just use a stepladder to stay close to the fan. (I'm here to help)
Gee thanx....
Personally I think the non-smokers should lock themselves in the can and turn on the fan until the smokers are done smoking...since they're the ones who have the complaint!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my opinion, the word "ban" is one of the most dangerous words in the English language...... There isn't alot of thought nor compromise which go into the word "ban".... it is a simple solution that advocates one group's desires over anothers, and I think that due consideration should be made concerning its use, whilst we still live in societies that consider themselves to be free......

I think that non smokers should not have to deal with the iritation or smell of smoke. I however disagree with banning by law, a buisness should be able to choose, if nonsmoking was the best choice then places would choose to ban and there would be no need for a law. That is basic buisness logic.
Smokers get a lot of slack but there are far worse toxins inside of any dwelling that go unnoticed. The finished wood in your flooring, furniture and even the paint on your walls outgass toxins. The enviorment inside of a house contains more toxins than the outside. ( then there are the leaks of utilities and co2 from the piolet light).
In traffic you are exposed to worse toxins than in a bar where people are smoking.
Dennis ( And then there is the general asumption that drugs are good for you, is it realy OK to put drugs in your mouth but not inhale them. Do you know what you are putting in your mouth? does your doctor? some of the chemicals are the same,,,, where do you stop questioning what is good for you. )

Societies ban book, movies, and people...etc.
All I would ask, is if you smoke, or don't, set up areas outside buildings where smokers can smoke, and non smokers shut up, and just don't go in those areas.
Can't stop people from smoking in public areas, but in an enclosed bus shelter that says no smoking... please don't smoke. Non smokers, if there is an area that smokers hang out.... don't go there and then start complaining.
The young lady who takes the bus and walks in public places, I agree it would be so nice to be able to walk some place where we don't have to inhale another person's smoke. It would be nice if smokers would consider respecting a non smoker (adult or child non smoker) and not pollute their lungs. The most garbage or trash that is found on the city streets, are cigarette butts and chewing gum.
Since I don't smoke, why do I have to clean up the cigarette butts from my front yard and the walk way? I hate coming home and finding someone cigarette butt still smoldering after being tossed on my lawn.
I'm not attacking smokers, just asking for respect.

djerba: As smoking has been shown to be harmful to health. the main health effect is that it causes lung cancer. research now shows that even people who don't smoke themselves are in danger of developping cancer when theu are regularly exposed to the smoke of people who do. besides, the danger of cancer, nonsmokers also complain that a smoky environment makes them suffer from a variety of illness including sore eyes, headaches, and even asthmatic symptoms. we should be cautious about banning smoking in all public spaces. if public space means all areas outside of private homes, then i don't agree with a ban . such a measure is an infringement of a basic right of enjoyment. but, in places where smoking is nuisance to nonsmokers, itshould be banned completely. such as rairoad carriages, buses and restaurants but not in city streets and open-air places. Let's talk!!!
We have a total ban on smoking in the workplace in NZ and it works well.
Initially, the smokers were upset about not being allowed to smoke in pubs clubs & restaurants, (even the club owners thought it would reduce business) but it became common place very soon after it's introduction & nobody is that upset anymore.
The clubs are a much nicer place to go to now, and owners say their business has increased rather than declined. (This may have something to do with the fact that smokers in NZ are a minority)
I personally feel it won't be long before smoking is banned in NZ altogether.
For the health of the nation, I agree with a total ban. JMO

I agree, too. But I also think that the nation should show the same level of consideration for smokers and provide a tiny little area with protection from the rain where they can slip out and smoke. Why is that not an option?

Currently that is the case here. Smokers areas are provided at most workplaces & it is still ok to walk down the street & smoke (although people dont look kindly on anyone smoking in public)
But it is fast becoming a common belief that smoking is linked to so many deaths & diseases. People are choosing health overall & the pressure from non smokers is hard to shrug off anymore.
I was a smoker for 15+ years and can honestly say life has been way better since I gave up 11 years ago.
