kidatheart: Funny you mention all the studies that have been done. Who profits from these "studies"?
We all know what is and isn't good for us, so why don't we choose to do what is?
The mayor of the town I'm moving to took $70,000 that was town money to improve the community and gave it to "someone" to do a study on what should be done with the money. Oddly enough there was nothing left afeter the study was done except a piece of paper stating there wasn't enough money left to do anything with the remainder.
This was several years ago and she's still the mayor. Smott peeples!
What makes it worse.....we elect these people. Maybe it's a reflection of ourselves?
Indyfella: People have known for 50 years it's unhealthy to smoke. If people didn't want tobacco products, they would cease to exist.
While I'm making an attempt to quit, if someone else want's to smoke....have at it. It's like anything else, it's a pesonal choice. I don't care to dictate my values onto someone else.
The argument that it is a personal choice is nonsense. If it were that kind of issue, every drug under the sun would be available to you on your local grocery store shelves. Tabacco is a lethal drug. It is sold to you so the tabacco industry can make money. Pure and simple. Smokers are pawns. Smokers are being exploited by the tabacco industry. The idea it is about choice is a fallacy.

I didn't vote for any of the current politicians, whether it be municipally, provincially or federally. I've even campaigned against some of the one's in power at the moment.

So it's the HUGE corporations going after the helpless little weaklings?

Actually, you can get most of the info right off the net - just put in a company name in your area along with "Emissions" or "Particulate Matter" and you should be able to find some sort of trail. They all have to have air quality permits and you can see what they are emitting, etc. You wouldn't believe what I found when I did it once.

P.S. Once you know what chemicals are involved, check out the HAPS list and see where it ranks in terms of toxicity. There's something like 26 hazardous chemicals listed (I don't remember the exact amount). It will start with the worst an work it's way down. It's been a few years, but that's how it used to be.

Don't know why the big caps on huge...don't know how huge the tabacco industry is...but I believe there is documentation to show that 30, 40, 50 years ago when it became known by the industry just how lethal tabacco is, it was covered up. And, yes, as a former smoker, one who smoked heavily for years, I believe smokers are weak...allowing yourself, your life, to be controlled by a chemical substance is a weakness. However large or not large, however powerful or not powerful the tabacco industry is or isn't, it has only one purpose and that is to make money from the weakness of others.
There should be places where smoking is allowed and places where smoking isn't allowed.
If you don't smoke you don't go to the places where it is allowed. I don't smoke. But my right as a non smoker does not mean that I can tell others that they can't smoke.
They can't smoke by me if we are in a place where smoking is not allowed, but I feel that there should be a place where they can smoke. I don't want to live in a police state.

WE up and moved. No kidding. It was THAT bad!
20 minutes away from me is one of the biggest industrail complexes in western Canada. They manufacture, ship and emit some of the nastiest substances known to man. Just south of that is refinery row in Edmonton.
KHD100: Actually there is documented medical records of people getting terminal cancer from second had smoke.
To keep a really long story short...there was a commerical on the radio stations around here saying 250 people a year die from 2nd hand smoke. I emailed a local talk show host and asked him to follow up on the ad. He invited the county coroner in for an interview. The coroner basically said no coroner would ever put down 2nd hand smoke as a reason for death. Not proveable... Incidently, WhiteLies (anti-smoking group) quit playing the ad. I was amused
