Had to pull over for many ambulances/firetrucks and police on my way to work yesterday. I just found out why. This is just horrible. I plan to take flowers to the hospital tomorrow when I get off of work. blues

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. -- A McMinnville man nearly killed his girlfriend when he set their home on fire Wednesday, police said.

Court documents said Larry Barnard was drunk, bipolar and off his medications when he poured gasoline inside their Marie Drive home just before 5:30 p.m.

The ensuing fire trapped 38-year-old Krista Wiegel in the home and she suffered burns on 90 percent of her body, witnesses said.

Witnesses said Wiegel had terrible burns on her face and arms and most of her hair had burned off.

Court records suggest she was trying to get away from her boyfriend when he set everything on fire.

Neighbor and witness Stephanie Varao tried to help pull Wiegel from the fire. Witnesses said Barnard also doused Wiegel with gas and set her on fire too.

"Oh man it was horrible. Her whole face was all burned, her clothes were burned. Her skin was just all black. It was just like peeling off. Her hair was all singed up," Varao said. "The friend said (Barnard) was just throwing gas everywhere and flicking matches."

Barnard had sent aggressive text messages to Wiegel throughout the day while she was at work, according to court records.

After work she brought a friend to her McMinnville home to help collect clothing for herself and three kids, investigators said.

After arriving home, Barnard made suicidal statements and then poured gas on himself and the mobile home before lighting everything on fire, police said.

When police arrived, Barnard was outside the house naked while Wiegel was still inside screaming for help, neighbors said.

"I just think that's disgusting. Like, wow, what were you thinking?" Varao said.

Investigators said Barnard climbed out a bedroom window to escape, leaving his girlfriend inside to burn behind locked doors.

Barnard is bipolar, was drunk and off his medication at the time of the fire, investigators said.

Two officers broke through the door of the home and helped Wiegel out, police said. A LifeFlight helicopter rushed her to Legacy Emanuel Hospital, where she was in critical condition Thursday.

Court documents said Barnard had been making suicidal statements before he poured gas on himself and the home.

Barnard suffered minor injuries. After he was released from a hospital, police arrested him on charges of arson and assault.

Hmmmm... Arson and assault? What the hell about manslaughter!!!!!

May be what he was arrested for won't be what he gets charged with when it goes to trial ...

People who suffer from mental conditions/illnesses are not always "responsible" for their actions, but I am surprised to hear that due to the bi-polar condition he was threat to someone elses life "on purpose", usually they can "be dangerous to themselves" but only hurt other people through lack of foresight/irrational thought pattern rather than what you describe ... i COULD VERY WELL BE WRONG THOUGH ... so don't quote me on that ...

I agree! My mother has severe bipolar as do some other family members. It has never made them want to hurt someone else, meds or no meds, just themselves.

He planned this, he knew what he was doing and he deserves to pay the price. I will be pissed if they pull the whole mental disability crap.

What I meant in my post is that if what I believe is true IE the pattern of behaviour of the bi-polar condition does NOT include agression towards others ... He WONT get away with it ... unless they discover he has something like schozophrenic tendencies. Even then he won't walk away free. What will be different is where he ends up ... Hopefully!!!!

If a bit bull is dangerous and has to be locked up. Then the owner lets the dog come and go as he pleases. If the dog rips someone to pieces without killing them.....the owner is responsible and faces charges.

Is not a person who is mental not the same as the pit bull, left to his own medication as he pleases and should not the doctors or the state or someone be responsible for seeing he always has his meds or faces charges for letting this wild dog out on the loose without supervision.

Actually, I am a mental health counselor!! I have worked in the field for many years. My degree is from Baptist Bible College...in Pastoral Theology!!

Bi-polar people do not send messages of aggression all day to their intended victims then do them harm. They are more prone to keep silent then do themselvef harm. Read the whole article, and you will see from where i made my assessment

"Your honor, its wasn't my fault I didn't take my medication, the bottle said 'keep out of reach of children' and well, my girlfriend always said I was a little childish"

...

"Your honor, that last beer forced it self down my throat."

It is a sad time indeed when one person would stop taking responsibility for his actions, and everyone else allows, encourages, and supports him in it.

shipoker55 was pretty much right on this one. He did plan in out the entire day.

It is the victim who always pays for others lack of meds or supervision.

If there is no surity of meds being given all the time and supervision the same a a parolee as to how they are doing. Someone will suffer and it most often is not the mental person.....but some one else.

Agree AND disagree ... people with mental illnesses/conditions are often tortured souls who suffer plenty in their heads, sometimes have to live with the results of the actions of things they did when their were have irrational thought patterns and find it dillicult to relationships that last (another source of agony)

And of course as you say someone ELSE who might be "at the receiving end" will suffer TOO (sometimes more, sometimes less), sometimes through the consequences of the ill person's actions, sometimes through the heartache of not being able to "help" the loved one who is ill ...

And, out of curiosity, why do you make reference to someone that is Bi-Polar, as being legally insane? They in fact, are not considered legally insane. Because someone is diagnosed with a mental illness does not mean a person can classify or categorize them as legally insane...

Also, if he showed signs of aggression towards another human being throughout the day, then his actions, in my opinion, are considered pre-meditated. Though I do not have a degree in mental illnesses, I do know some people that are bi-polar, and what little I know, they are dangerous to themselves if not treated, but not towards others

Here is where you absolutely lose credibility any mental health professional worth their salt would not even attempt to make an assessment form the information provided
