It took hundreds of years for the Roman empire to collapse. They fell for the exact same reasons as the US is now discovering. Except everything is now accelerated through technology. If you could go back in time and ask a Roman under Caesar about their country and the power that they held over the known world, they would say, "We're the greatest power on earth, and will remain so".

This isn't a party issue , it's a whole denial mentality. Having polled my friends - I have found the ones who voted Bush in and are McCain supporters have no real grip on reality. They think there's no recession because their jobs haven't been affected yet, they argue there's no global warming because they haven't been outside their small world they live in, they think we just need to drill for more oil - rather than look for alternative fuel. These same people have no real substantial reason why they like McCain, and argue that Obama will raise taxes and cater to the poor with their tax money. It's purely prejudice against Obama for being black , and ignorant denial for having already made a bad choice. They seem to be stubborne McCain supporters just to save face. It's pure ignorance. Personally, judging by how the man acts, I think Obama is clearly the one who will do the right thing. He may be inexperienced , which might allow him to think outside the box - rather than follow a traditional and beaten path . WE Need Serious Change !! Whatever we do here affects the whole world economy . Think again people, think hard this time !
Nobody is qualified to be president, until they're actually president. Until that first briefing occurs, people have no idea what they're in for...
That's why I'm voting Obama. Sure, he's young, inexperienced, possibly arrogant as hell. All the signs of youth, and all a reflection of the callow arrogance of our country itself. Something the position is in sore need of. Read above and think about this: Youth adapts, Age reacts. I don't want a president that is going to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. He's the only one talking about the future as the future, rather than a return to something we already know won't work.
Whatever. My two cents. You people will vote your own conscience. I've seen the possibility of an actual unified secular nation, free of all the bigoted rhetoric that accompanies our nation's inherint hypocrisy. Martin Luther King's dream could take a big step forward, if people could just set aside their dogma's and work together as Americans, without racial or creed distinctions.

you are correct Leo. My late Stepfather would verse me on how the parralel of that time and this time were following the same steps, just as many fled to the US as so did the Etruscans flee from Asia Minor (modern day Turkey). My Late stepfather wrote out a series of events which followed just what we have and of course after the change of Rome from republic to empire, the Monarchy of ceasar and then his nephew Octavious for many years. Where are we in that present timeline? hmmm , who will know till it is there? This is not about a election. more of where we have led ourselves to and if we will learn from mistakes made time and time again. History tends to repeat itself. Mankind seems to repeat the same mistakes and weaknesses. ;-}

Obama could be lilly white and with his proposals I'd still think he's bad for the country. McCain is only slightly better. Obama's 143 days in the senate aren't all that impressive.
BarrenPneuma: To be fair Conrad, the solutions required are extremely surgical in nature and will require many treatments to enact. No band-aid solution will work and they will all take years if not generations before we see any positive results. Politicians walk into a mess created before they were born and extrapolated by every person that sat in their seat before them. Some things that have been done by their predecessors are good and healthy for life and politics but the entirity looks like the weave in a Persian rug. Pluck one string and it may unravel the whole. Quite daunting and foolhardy at the same time. Most just try to colour the thread to add their own feeling to it and leave it unchanged except for the last few rows that they put in themselves. JMO
