For one thing marriage probably didn't last very long - life expectancy was a lot lower.......... you were lucky if a couple of kids out of four or five survived childhood and probably many more women died during childbirth itself than today.

Also there was always a war going on - so I'd guess many ordinary families grew up without a Daddy being along for more than a few years - with many going off to fight and a good percentage not making it back home.......... who knows - maybe there were more single families then than there are now!

Well, I`d say it was rather more about survival than romance .... Everyone at as much as they could and got fat and podgy to ward off the bitter cold, and they all worked very hard to grow and store food, and the men did lots of little war fighting stuff when they werent out hunting wild boars....... And then when there weren`t any Romans Legionaires around - they could all sit around their camp fires listening to the Druids waxing eloquent, play their harps and drums, and consider the next solstice festival .... pretty much like in the Asterix and Obelix stories....?

I think that perhaps most watch too many stupid Hollywood movies; speaking of which, Terry Jones (from Monty Python infamy), has a book out as well as an accompanying DVD called Barbarians on how our various Celt and Gothic tribes lived and eventually turned Rome into a ghetto . It indeed may enlighten some ...

We are talking about Northern Europe.

Actually, Women had a great deal of respecta and autonmy. A vinking wife could divorce her Husband by making a declaration aqnd it was custom that she would take the small children with he, and that the
separating couple would divide the older kids between them. The wife could take whatever she brought into the marriage out with her.

Hunting wild boars?

Smoky, dear..... that was just for the alpha males - my great great great great etc grandpa was happy to come home with a couple of field mice and a few wild berries! (He didn't have that much luck with the women, but I think he impersonated the grunting of an alpha wild boar hunting male one dark and moonless night - and here I am today to prove it! thumbs up )

It was Queen Alfred actually - she was a cross-dresser for 'political' reasons...... and yes, she WAS distracted when I gave her gusset a playful 'tweak'! help

Yes, I know! ..... The wheel just keeps turning ... nothing much ever changes ... just the wheels get faster and faster.

After I posted that I thought "Hey, everyone is STILL getting fat and podgy! Just like then! ..... and men are still fighting, only now they got long-range weapons, and we fight our way thru supermarkets instead of forests, and we get hunted down in the cities (in certain countries) ...... and we still sit around our campfires waxing eloquent, and play our guitars and djembis!" ....... So yeah, nothing much has realy changed........

... But 1008 is not so far in the distant past ..... there`s a water-wheel at the Rhine-falls thats dated 1100 something .........

..... and we just about to celebrate another huge solstice event too! ... we just do it in a more pagan manner lately - that our pagan ancestors would not recognise!cheers
