I am a Registered Nurse and for several years worked on a Pediatric Cancer unit in a very large hospital in Michigan. One of my very first patients was this beautiful little Mexican girl who was about 7 years old, she had Leukemia. I worked five days a week and really got to know her and her family and she and I became very close. It was a difficult time for her. She underwent several months of radiation and chemotherapy. She finally had a Bonemarrow Tranplant as a last resort, a life saving measure. Those few months were horrible. Her little body was ravaged by the radiation and chemotherapy and she almost passed away on us a couple times. On her good days she would call me into her room late at night and ask me to play and watch the movie "Griese" with her and her father(who was with her every minute of every day). She would make me sit in bed with her and hold her little hand through the entire movie. Before her discharge, her father and I became best friends and for the next few years, our families were very close and he and his siblings were like brothers to me. We did everything together family trips, get togethers and celebrations. Shortly after her 11th birthday, she relapsed again this time the Leukmia came back very aggressive and infiltrated her brain. We were all devastated. I felt like I was losing a daughter, it hurt so bad. The next few weeks were very trying and the treatment failed, she was dying. She was discharge from the hospital when she was stable. The following day, I was visiting her at home. Her father and I were sitting with her and she wouldn't take her eyes off of me. She told me she loved me. I asked her if she could have one wish what would it be; she said she always dreamed of getting dressed up and going out on a date and she wanted her first date to be with me.I picked her up that night shee was wearing a beutiful long white dress and I wore a suit and tie.We saw a movie and had dinner at her favorite restaurant; Big Boy. I took her home and we danced on the sidewalk under the moonlight. She passed away 2 days later in our arms. I remember that night like it was yesterday, dancing to her favorite song "Dreaming" by Selena playing from my trucks radio. I have great confidence in Humanity and Love. I ask you all to dig deep and think hard and tell us of the most selfless thing you have ever done for anyone.I will read responses only. Bless all of you.

Nice story. There have been patients that have touched me and the children are the hardest. I was recently in a restaurant and a girl kept staring at me. I was kind of uncomfortable.

She finally came over and asked if I was a Dr.. I told her yes and she proceeded to tell me how I had saved her life after a car accident.

I told her that there was a staff of us, not just me, but she was very thankful and it made me feel great.

I have never been to any patient's home, but then again, I usually see them such a short amount of time. Once I stabilize, they are either discharged or admitted.

But some I keep in contact with through their stay.

As far as the most unselfish thing I have ever done, I am doing it. My best friend passed away over the holidays and left his wife and kids with a small life insurance policy and a ton of debt.

I am moving up to live in the basement and finish it while I live there, and will pay rent which will pay the mortgage and utilities while she goes to school. She was a stay at home mom and did not have a degree.

I have had to put my own personal life on hold until the house sells which will be quite a while in this market, or until she is able to provide from the kids.

You're a wonderful man. The good that you do and have done will come back to you ten fold. I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend.

God Bless You!

The only thing I can even think of was the time I told my ex-boyfriend to take his ex-girlfriend to the prom, since he'd already asked her before they broke up. They ended up getting back together. She & I eventually became best friends & I ended up being in their wedding. cool

When I was a security guard, I worked the graveyard shift. So my kids and I decided to not hang out with the relatives for Thanksgiving, and invite some homeless people. One daughter said you can't just walk up to homeless people and say get in my car I am taking you to dinner.

So my other daughter said Ma, what about the people you see on your shift? So I let a few of the floks know that I was having thanksgiving at my house, and at seven when it was time for me to leave work I had to call my daughter and my son to come in seperate cars. And I drove my car.

Actually it was one of the best Thanksgivings I had ever had. We played "Songburst, and Pictionary, and ate ouselves into bad health. Me my five kids, and 11 homeless people.

rolling on the floor laughing

as far as unselfish "acts" of myself?

i make none- its christ in me because of my own i have a selfish fearful nature

and most kindnesses i have done i was a bit trancelike doin it
did it as a vessel and cant even think of any right now

plus its been suggested to me that to tell anyone
or mention them to the recipient diminishes it a bit

oh yeah-my human nature is also prideful and boastful

so even to not tell my good deeds is a self sacrifice

I would have to say the time a friend and I went swimming at the lake and we had swam all day and was wore out.
I told her not to go out too far, but she did and got in trouble.
I risked my life knowing I was as tired as her, but I swam out and pulled her most of the way back in then some guys swam out with an inner tube and brought her in rest of the way. laugh

One of my unselfish moments was about two years ago, I was traveling to Dallas for a class for my police department.

During my travel, it was one of the worst snow/ice storms they had seen in a long time. I noticed on the freeway ahead of me a car spin out of control and hit a guardrail on a bridge, the car was going slow enough that it just bounced like a pinball.

Once it stopped, I pulled off on the side of the road, grabbed my police jacket and went to assist. My gf at the time called 911 for me.

When I got to the car, I could tell the airbag deployed and the driver was semi-conscience. Her daughter was in the back seat with her little brother who was in a car seat. They were quite awake and responsive. I talked to them to keep thier spirits up and was able to get the mom to be somewhat responsive to my words. It was only a few minutes until everyone showed up, but it seemed longer. The EMS guys were inpressed that I stopped for the accident and was assisting them getting thier gear out of the ambulance.

To this day, I wonder about that woman and always wondered how she is and her family. I still don't remember her name.

One thing that did bother me about the whole accident was that it was a busy freeway and no one stopped to see if I needed an extra hand. That fustrated me more then anything else.

Good thread Gab.

I gave someone every dime I had which amounted to $60K because they were desperately in need. They said they would pay me back when they received the proceeds of a lawsuit but instead said they thought it was a gift. It caused me to go into bankruptcy at my ripe old age of 66. Once again I trusted someone. You may not see this as selfish but if it didn't happen I wouldn't have to be working for another seven years. I gave up my retirement so that I could help someone.

Loved a man just the way he is, and given him every bit of my heart...and cared for him alone, at his insistence, with no respite workers, no family or friends to relieve me...and months of virtually no sleep...until he finally had to go into hospice for his last 4 days of life...and wept that he hadn't been able to die at home.

I try to forget things I've done out of kindness or generosity for friends or strangers, but I do remember one instance. A friend introduced me to a young lady who was on disability from a bad car wreck (neck, head & back). Her husband died and she had 2 teenage daughters. They lived in a tiny house with no heating system just an old wood stove and almost no firewood. 4 of the windows were broken and she had 1 room that was crammed full of her stuff because she had no place to put it. Winter was coming on fast.
I measured the windows and went to the hardware store to get glass and installed the missing windows. That was priority no 1. Next I bought a folding stair for the ceiling and installed it in the living room. I then went to the Home Depot and bought plywood for the attic to put down flooring and after thet I ran some lights up there. This enabled her to move her stuff up into the attic and free up a room. Next I scouted around and found someone getting rid of a load of firewood which I picked up with my big 22 foot truck. A few hours with a chain saw and splitting maul and she had wood for the winter. Oh yeah, one of her daughters forgot to leave the lightbulb on in the pumphouse and it got really cold and the waterpump froze and cracked so I replaced that too.
It felt really good to know I made somebodies life bearable.
