And then they wonder how the English could misunderstand the Scottish for wanting a common Kingdom.
Hugz_n_Kissez: Of course I rely on good spelling and punctuation to choose my partners...after all...that's the main thing that they can spell and punctuate...as for being a good, loving, caring person, I'm sure it's all in the spelling!!!!!
I am very critical of a persons writing skills as long as that person it me. For having a BS in English Literature my skills pretty much suck and my spelling is among the worst on CS. So when it comes to other people, I have no grounds to be a critic.
Than god for spell check.... I just wish we had it on this site.
If its considering someone as a romantic interest , it would be very impressive if he is a good communicator and can express himself well. Its an added feather to the charm cap.
Nevertheless, to be expressive , it can be in words , by actions or even simple jestures and acts. So .. it neednt be written excellence perse.
Its not how he is saying something that matters but his sensitivity in what he is saying.
Partially. I really try not to worry with spelling errors, even with spell check being embedded into almost every windows platform. *grin... I try to take into consideration where the person might be coming from.
If I'm dealing with an American(in their 20's, for example), I try to see how well they express themselves aside from grammatical issues. A few spelling errors aren't as unappealing as blatant asininity, or word butchering. If it takes me too many times of rereading to decipher a messege... I lose interest quickly. If they say something to the effect of: "I'm in *insert college name here*" I have a degree in *enter name of anything that deals with the public or big words* or I've been to X-many countries... I kind of expect them to know how to convey a basic messege.
I do make exception for individuals with a foreign mother tongue. I make great exception, in fact. I've seen greater efforts made to communicate in English from Europeans(for example) than many Americans. Credit goes to anyone who learns a foreign language, in my book!
NorseMedic: If a person writes you an e-mail indicating they are interested in getting to know you or correspond with you – will their level of spelling and correct use of grammar affect your interest and/or your response?
English is not my native language, so basically everything I post have been written in Microsoft Word to begin with, so the worst spelling errors and grammar mistakes are corrected before sending e-mails or posting on the forum. In my mind I have to at least make an effort if I want people to read what I have written and sometimes I consider it disrespectful to not even try and read a letter through just once before sending, to correct any obvious errors. Why should I use my time to respond, if the author hasn’t even made an effort to write just a slightly bit civilized?
Funnily enough especially people whose native tongue is English tend to write like they were 1st graders; and other foreigners like myself try a little harder and make fewer mistakes, probably because we have to be more conscious when using this language.
What say Thou, o’ mighty boarders of CS – am I OCD’ing or just paying attention to details?
good point here,,and I indeed am impressed with your diligence. I think that many of us are just "very casual" when it comes to coresponding here. Although, there are times when I really wonder what some people are saying!! LOL,,,btw,,what is your first language?? I am curious now. ;-}

I don't really mind a few misspelled words, I'm the queen of typos. But I do like to be able to understand the message. I've read some profiles that made no sense at all. One or two short sentences with not punctuation, c'mon, we are communicating in writing here, trying to attract a date or a mate or something! If you're not capable of that, find somewhere that being illiterate is not an obstacle!
Writing skill matters a great deal to me. While I do realize that some people just aren't very verbally talented, it doesn't change the fact that I judge people based on their use of punctuation and the meticulousness with which they've proofread. If English isn't a first language, I'm not as much of a stickler for structure as long as punctuation and line breaks are used. I've found I can usually understand what's being said regardless of structure, and English does have so many extra words to remember. My feeling is that since forums and e-mails do not require the speed that live chat or even IMing does, there's no excuse for not proofing at least once.
I agree that people who aren't native speakers often do write better than native ones. I wonder if this is true for other languages as well?

I have to admit at being dreadful with typos, as the keyboard strokes seem to have a mind of their own. But that aside, I'm with you on that one. Good spelling and a fabulous writing style, even if only 5 words, does for me every time,lol. Can't help it.
