a few people on here yes. some of the people have specific personalities. i actualy like to post threads and polls just to read the responses from certain members. some give good advice and others give smartass answers that make me laugh.
i think one can get a sense of 'style' but not so much content,or deep understanding, from reading posts in the forums. i think at best, it's often superficial....like meeting someone at an event or function...you get a bit of an idea about them, but it's only the tip of the iceberg. developing a relationship deep enough to truly start to understand someone requires both folks to get a bit vulnerable. and i'm not sure the forums is the place to do that.
i have developed several good friendships during my time on cs, but these are mostly from private mails over a long period of time, or meeting in real life, both have contributed to deeper connections.
forums can be a place to initially meet someone. what one does with that...is entirely up to the individual.
sooo....my answer is no. (often what we think we understand is only our own projection on someone...and i don't think that's understanding)
Trying all the time. Listening, thin slicing. But what does it matter, ifya never meet?????? Wonderful that you can actually TRY to understand people from such far off places tho.

It's just not possible in my opinion. How can you understand or know anyone here in the true sense when all you get really is a tiny inkling of what they are about.
Except of course those who never seem to sleep or work and are here 24/7! They have more time perhaps to reveal a bit more of themselves.
