The US was settled by many who were indentured meaning they were released from debtor's prisons and sent over here to work a term to earn full freedom....as with both countries it was the rough and courageous sorts who came here first. those boat trips were not for the feint of heart!!

For some reason lots of Scandinavians picked Minnesota as the best state to move to. Perhaps Minnesota reminded them about their home country. I have a movie to recommend called Sweet Land....you must see it. It is fully in English but for a few words of german and norweigan. it tells a lovely and heartwarming story of exactly the kind of thing you are describing in your post.
Many come here and settle in areas that gepgraphically remind them of home, so true!....Swedes in the upper middle west and Norwegians & Germans! It is cold weather country, flat, farmable & familiar to them. The Scots settled in the eastern mountains because it reminded them of the highlands of home. Mountain people are a different sort (I should know I'm from the stock). They have their ways. There are books called the Firefox Project that tell of how the Applachin lifestlye is preserved and influenced by the scots - including the folk music, and the mistrust of flatlanders & speculators(that I still share believe it or not). lol
Many of the immigrants from warmer climates settle in places like Florida, Texas and Southern California for similar reasons.
