Personally I quite like the city, it's interesting, has some of the best food in Europe and some very hospitable people. It has become touristy sadly and like every major city there are good and bad areas.
I prefer Florence and Siena, but that's just a personal opinion.

As Italian nationality, I can tell you personaly Italian food its the best in the world ( lots of variety ) and I a have eaten all kind of foods. From kebab to Chinese. My own country has also a good variety of food ( oriental ) and if it cooked well ,you have good dishes.
Its strange how people know more Florence then Rome. I guess its the landscape and Tuscany wine . ( I worked three years in Tuscany near Siena- for the great Mr Ferragamo ). A great stylist shoes know very well in U.S.A ) . He's from Florence.
galrads: I know where the really really really good food can be found in Rome, Italy. It's not in the touristy parts. The locals there won't eat that crud.
The area of really fine dining is very close to Circus Maximus and Tiber Island but just on the other side of the river in the, in the, Trastevere area.... within easy walking from Roma Termini.

yep that is one of the best areas in Rome where you can eat very good food. I've give a tip man, whenever you go to Rome again in the area of Trastevere, there is a Restaurant called ( LA PAROLACCIA ) translated in english means Swearing. Its the best restaurant in Rome to me , where you eat very good food, but there is a downside. The waitress , the chef and the owner can swear with you . There are two exceptions ( no offence to family and kids ). And out side the restaurant there is a sign ( if you can't stand swearing, don't enter ). Its hilarieuse. I don't know if the restaurant is still open or not.

Bogart_1960: beautiful city, great "views", historical, but only for a few days. I prefer the northern part of Italy.
btw, i always make time for gelato... for obvious reasons !
best gelato in the world man, and if you go to Florence , you get the gelato that you never had in your life. All sort of flavours...like bubble gum.
I remember in 2010 I worked in Sardegna , I went to see the Island of Madeleine ( where napoleon house is ) just opposite LA Corse. I went to this gelateria and for 2 euros I had this mega cone, that if I wouldn't have said to the girl stop that's enough, she would have carry on
