I'm throwing out an educated thought--"Happy Holidays" covers multiple celebrations, Christian and non. Jewish, Kwanza, etc...usually fall around the same time as Christmas. Because we are a "melting pot" it's kind of a way to be courteous to many without being presumptuous. Not such a bad idea, if you ask me. There are many, many English people living in the United States who say "Ducks". just so you know...it's not archaic as you imply. Reminds me of that adage used in Army posters--"Hey Private Smith--help me out with this marching problem. All the other troops are out of step--except YOU."
