serena1206cutie: for travelling...for working...whatever, do you plan to come here?
Yes I intend to visit and work there, in 1-2 years depending on how well my new career as an English teacher goes. My understanding is that I need at least 12 months experience before I can get work in China.
I was enroute to Hong Kong in 2007 and had shenzen as part of the plan even had me ticket paid for, had to cancel, been to Jakarta Indonesia Singapore KL Malaysia Taipei Tiewan and Seoule Korea, was fun
avecaim: on the way to help the Tibetans free themselves
Good answer......... as a kid I visited Nepal (before loads of tourists started going) and met the other Dalai Lama (sorry if I spelt it wrong).... I have wonderful memories of hurtling down mountain tracks on fleet-footed Tibetan ponies and staying under canvas in some medical missionary outpost on the slopes of Annapurna.
My parents led an exciting life..... I was lucky to get dragged along some of the time.

I am thinking to go to Urumqi, China at the end of August and waiting for my visa but i am a little bit scared because of the recent ethnic fight that happened there recently. What do you think is it dangerous to go there now?

I visited Hong Kong back when it was under UK control and really enjoyed it. I'll put Shanghai on my to do list.
Currently people arriving from US to China are being detained in holding centers to verifiy they are not infected with swine flu.
Reports have stated these centers are not very pleasant. I don't know about people arriving from other countries thier situation.
I visited ShangHai in 1995/1996 and it was very nice. A lot of people on the streets, stores etc. during the day. Then at night only people out were going to clubs.
Beautiful gardens, museums, and lots of places to eat. I needed the skill of using chop sticks to eat as most of the resteraunts did not have tableware back then. Learn to use chop sticks to eat with before going is a big help. Don't drink the water unless it is boiled for tea. Never use ice in any beverage. Never eat fresh vegetables or fruits. I was healthy and fine during my stay.
Nice things to buy made of silk and jade. If it says Art Silk it means artificial (synthetic) silk.
Speking Mandarin is a tone language. To learn you need to actually hear the words spoken. Trying to learn from a book will not work.
US Visa to emigrate to the US can take a citizen of China 10 years or so to obtain. Fastest way is getting a fiance /fiancee then it may take one year.
